4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | May 13th 20 | It is not hard to imagine how post-rock, screamo and post/hardcore elements could be combined successfully but to do so with such proficiency and great songwriting skills is truly what Envy has accomplished on 'The Fallen Crimson'. Countless beautiful melodies, wonderful wandering bittersweet atmospherics, numerous textures on the guitars and success with spoken word/screamed/sung vocal elements are some of the things that make this record special. The songs feel like discrete entities that can be enjoyed on their own and at the same time the whole play-through adds up to what feels like a cinematic journey or story of its own. It is impressive how Envy are able to do well with the hardcore powerchord sections and the long melodic lead guitar driven passages to create an album that has one of the best overall flows of recent memory and excellent tension builds and releases. One of the best early 2020 releases.

5.0 classic | Malcontent | February 14th 20 | More experimental, heartfelt, and self-assured than Envy has sounded in years. Tetsuya Fukagawa sounds amazing, the instrumentation has never sounded more vibrant, and most crucially: this is the first time post-rock has sounded like it *matters* in years. It's not just that each song is structured to be it's own structure, each a castle of sound - it's that it sounds critical, vital. There hasn't been anything in this genre that grips the listener so urgently since Sunbather in 2013. Rhythm is a beautiful outlier that pays off beautifully, giving the following Marginalized Thread - itself a heroic piece alone - so much more gravitas. The album art depicts a winged woman holding thorns, staring into a night sky. It's nothing like any of their past album art (with the possible exception of the pained artwork on Alnair in August) and it captures the spirit of the sound within so well: the heights of eternity above, the pain of earth beneath, and the people caught in the middle. The reports of Envy's demise were well publicized before this album was released. I hope they stay together for years to come, but if this is their final work, they are leaving on a very, very high note.

4.3 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | February 11th 20 | Their best output since Abyssal. While the two previous outputs sometimes fell flat because of their generic use of post-rock, the balance between post-rock and screamo has been more worked on here, as the violent bursts of screamo and post-hardcore are pounding much harder in comparison with their precedent records. A good example of that is the way Rhythm flows into Marginalized Thread, and how the former's beauty helps highlighting the latter's crushing sadness. Speaking of Marginalized Thread, it's absolutely remarkable the band decided to entirely redo the Alnair in August singles. A band so willing to offer their fans the best possible version of themselves is actually a rare thing, and this kind of attitude is one of the reason why Envy are so fucking loved. Going back to how the album sounds like, as often with good skramz, the experience is as uplifting as it is depressing, and the band hadn't combine the two so well since Insomniac Doze. It even puts to shame all the recent third-wave post-rock and is more chaotic than what we've been used to with them. The best of screamo mixed with the best of post-rock makes for the best of both world. Some things are eternal, Envy is one of them.

5.0 classic | Brady Hayes | February 10th 20 | I refuse to believe a song like Rhythm actually exists under Envy?s name. Quite possibly one
of the most gorgeous post-rock songs I?ve heard in years.
Edit: Yeah lets see how long this 5 last, them redoing the two stellar EP tracks and
outdoing them is something else.

3.5 great | Chino smoking it up! | February 11th 20 | TKS Sput for setting me up to Japanese screamo...I mean wtf...I get a lot of post vibes from bands such as Alcest. Pretty good and genuine stuff. First time with the band. I kinda envy ppl who are able to adore this (sorry for the pun). I'm crazy for the tracks Statement of Freedom and A Faint New World, they are so awesome, but then I end up getting super annoyed until Fingerprint Mark (another banger). I'm sorry I don't live up to this hype. Maybe that changes again...

2.0 poor | Bandit1786 | February 11th 20 | This is the type of album that everyone with a deep nostalgia for Envy is going to love and everyone else who enjoys some complexity and good vocals with their music is going to dislike. Not horrible by any means. But nothing special.

4.5 superb | leviegalapon | February 4th 20 | This is so good, definitely an early AOTY contender, I actually think this is my favorite Envy album, the songs are concise and melodic, even the longer songs are a joy to listen throughout
