The album Line In The Sand is Zox's third release, and their second on SideOneDummy records. The album is a rock album at heart, although it incorporates a unique blend of rock, punk, indie, and alternative.
Part of the reason I love listening to the album so much is the way one can feel their emotions changing over the course of their songs. The first song, title track "Line In The Sand", has the feel of someone making a stand against someone else. The third track, "Goodnight", is an acoustic ballad that incorporates layered vocals and an interesting array of instruments providing the background. As the album continues on, the listener can feel frustration and recognition; anger and contempt turn to apathy and then turn back.
The lyrics are mostly straight-forward and to the point, but melodic and picturesque at the same time. As for the instruments used, they use a nice variety that includes electric/acoustic guitar, bass, drums, violin, and highly distorted guitars sparingly. Their instrumentation is wonderful, and they chose the right instruments to reflect the tone and mood of the song.
Overall, I enjoy listening to this album a great deal. Whether I'm just listening to one song at a time or the entire album straight through, the songs just feel right, and that's quite an accomplishment for any band.
