Not so much underrated as it is underappreciated. The title track is colossal and sees Coltrane take on a Spanish influence in a different way than Miles' Sketches of Spain, which deviated further from jazz and improvisation with its larger ensemble. It's intense in a different sense than his later more difficult work. It makes interesting use of two bass players, who manage to integrate seamlessly, as well as Eric Dolphy. The other highlight is Aisha - a beautiful ballad written by McCoy Tyner.

One of the great Coltrane albums. The track "Ole" starts off with a killer bass riff. This album is a harder sound than "My Favourite Things" but I think that is what makes me go back to "Ole" on a regular basis. If you like Coltrane, get this album.

Coltrane & Dolphy: Act I. It also confirms Trane's ambition to open his orchestra to other confines - namely, Spain, Middle East, India, and Africa. With extra rhythmic help (two bassists and some traditional Indian percussions), he slightly gets off his harmonics craze without sacrificing melody, with the never-decreasing (at that time) modal jazz influence. Like My Favorite Things, this is a record whose legacy mostly comes from its opening tune, but the rest still show how entrancing the Coltrane/Dolphy duo can be - just give them smooth melodies and they will charm you.

A very fun recored, and the first track in particular is spectacular. Tyner and Jones transform Coltrane's band into a collective of absolute virtuosos. The reason for the lower rating is that it does not explore any new territory.

1961, what a year for Coltrane. The t/t on this is a top tier Coltrane tracks and one of his darkest? at this point, yet swingy at the same time. Easily brought this in 4.5 territory at 4.23-4.3 if not more. It's kind of Favorite Things' dark emo cousin, with some Oriental vibes coming from the Spanish influences. 2 is a bit more regular chill jazz. Like for 1 I really dig the presence of drums in the mix, but it just feels like a safer, less interesting albeit good track. Dropped this just below 4.5 tier, especially because it is a bit too long for its ideas. 3 is far more relaxed, late day jazz. I quite dig it and it is very nice, but I'm not sure I agree with the decision to end on such a downward energy and spice curve. The bonus track flows very well from 3 and just feels like a smoother, date version of 3 that works a little better and is very sweet, but because it wasn't in Coltrane's original releast I don't feel like I can count it in. 4.15
