Perhaps Minus the Bear's greatest achievement is writing an album that seemlessly combines technical progressive effects pedal prowess with catchy, infectious hooks. Perhaps its Menos el Oso's greatest trick is its creative depth and its rewarding subsequent listens. Perhaps this album just RULES and Minus the Bear are FRIGGIN GENIUS. nuff said.

A departure of sorts from Highly Refined Pirates, only in style. Minus The Bear's complexity remains with a very upbeat math pop sound. Very solid tracks blended between a flurry of very obvious filler is a black cloud on the record as a whole, however the four solid tracks are an easy 5/5

This is one of the most nostalgic albums, personally. Definitely more focused than Pirates', and in my opinion contains more creative licks than Planet of Ice. So many great singles on this album. I recommend Menos first to someone who has never checked out MTB.

While less technical than the higher acclaimed "Highly Refined Pirates", this record is definitely more cohesive and consistent than Pirates. Fantastic guitar and vocal work are present throughout, and it just seems a little bit more mature than Pirates was. Pirates was still fucking awesome, but this is definitely smoother and more accessible. At times however, the arrangements may get a little out of hand, but most of the time this album is genius.

i first got into these guys a few years ago when i got to college cuz a couple buddies in my dorm played em all the time. then they came to play on campus and i have to say it was probably the most boring live show i have ever seen and really made me lose interest in the band.... too bad.

This albums soars high with cuts such as "The Fix," and "Drilling," and "Pachuca Sunrise," and "Memphis & 53rd" remain some of Minus the Bear's best work, but the rest of the album just does not seem to be at par with these tracks. "Hooray" comes close but loses track during the distorted courses. "El Torrente" starts out promising, but then goes nowhere. If it weren't for the album's incredibly high points, this would just be some average album.

While Minus the Bears sound is undenably infectious, they seem to lack that certain something I was expecting after hearing the odd song here and there and being blown away by the sound some years back. Now that I've finally gotten around to really checking this band out, I'm finding that although - at least this release - is an enjoyable record, though it doesn't leave anything that really sticks with me. There is no track that just possesses me, forcing me to play it over and over again until I bleed it dry. Instead there is a collection of tracks, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but something that does create a feeling of 'whole'; perhaps that was the idea behind this one all along...

A long-time favorite, I decided to take Menos El Oso off the shelf this weekend and give it a few plays. Surprisingly, I was disappointed. Maybe I'm unfairly comparing it to MtB's other masterpieces, but once I knew what they were capable of in Planet of Ice or even Highly Refined Pirates, it becomes hard to love Menos El Oso with the same vigor. Anyway, while this has some great songs in "The Fix," "Pachura Sunrise," and "Hooray," the Menos El Oso sound becomes slightly repetitive. On the other hand, this album is still fun, and is an accessible gateway album to a spectacular band.
