4.5 superb | cloakanddagger | October 25th 19 | The second half of this album is fantastic. Distant Bells and Foreigner are so damn good.

4.0 excellent | Trey STAFF | January 23rd 20 | Pitfalls might have been an easier album for me to accept than it was for long-time fans. I wasn’t really that big of a fan of the band before Malina. I enjoyed the electronic elements the band introduced on Malina, and I appreciated the fact that Einar was starting to really let loose with his vocals. So, I really enjoyed the electronic and dance elements on Pitfalls, and I loved that Einar didn’t seem to be holding anything back on his vocals. I also didn’t have any issues with the ‘Einar Solo Album’ complaint that made its way around when Pitfalls was first released. It didn’t bother me that Pitfalls was not a progressive metal album by any conventional definition of the genre, because it was still absolutely progressive. There was really no other way to describe the way Leprous took their particular brand of melancholic prog, injected it with pop, dance and electronic music, and still came out the other side with something new and refreshing. Pitfalls was a vocal-driven, synth-laden, exercise in everything prog can be when a band isn’t scared to break from convention, and I was definitely hooked.

4.0 excellent | judasgoat | December 7th 19 | Not only do we get aaaaAAAAAAaaaaas but we also get hey-heys, eyaeyaaaaeyaeyaaaaeyaaaaas, oooooooooooohhhhs, OH-OH-OHOHOHs, and WOAH-O-WOAH-O-WOAHs too. I really don't know what y'all are complaining about.

4.0 excellent | Fernando Alves STAFF | November 20th 19 | Einar Solberg's leading role in Pitfalls is all too evident, to the point that it can almost be considered a solo album. This is usually a sign that the band may be reaching a breaking point, but if we ignore the touchy issues between musicians, Pitfalls' artistic quality is undeniable.

3.5 great | Horfeepee01 | November 4th 19 | Einar Solberg is a superb vocalist. The first time I heard "Below" that chorus gave me chills; but unfortunately, outside of the vocals, there just isn't much to behold here. Not a bad release by any stretch of the imagination, just not up to par with their previous releases. 3.2.

3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | December 4th 19 | All aboard the wonderful vocals and not much else to see here train. 'At the Bottom', 'Below' and 'Distant Bells' will be remembered but as a whole album Leprous have just sacrificed the instrumentation too much to make 'Pitfalls' an album you want to replay and explore for 50+ listens like TPS - The Congregation were. Bands change, of course, and props for Leprous for really exploring and doing what they wanted to but beyond the vocals there are beyond pedestrian synth workings, the occasional interesting drum part and strings that feel a bit forced into the compositions. Fun for a few listens and staggering to hear just how good Einar is but loses its charm rather quickly.

4.0 excellent | MaySun91 | December 3rd 19 | I am fully enamored with "Alleviate." Some of the best vocal work in the past few years on that song.

3.5 great | Doublez38 | November 26th 19 | Objectively I realize that it's a good album and that this guy has a beautiful voice, but Pitfalls gives me the impression that I'm being suspected of illusion, an album that sounds wonderful but actually has a lot of things that aren't that great. Einar Solberg has a voice that is too maneuverable for my taste, which disturbs my listening, and I manage to get past it. Apart from that, in this "perfect" appearance, there are moments underneath, but fortunately Leprous still has the talent to offer us solid tracks like Foreigner for example

3.5 great | Erwann S. STAFF | November 25th 19 | I never listened to Leprous so had absolutely no expectations. This is some good synthy prog pop rock, even though this genre in general does not appeal to me that much. One of these records where I'm like 'ye it's v gud', but won't return much often (other band in that category: Anathema). 3.7

3.0 good | Deadwing2112 | October 25th 19 | Synth heavy and dramatic vocals represent a major shift from previous albums. The second half outperforms the first and splits the rating down the middle for the entirety of Pitfalls as a consequence.
