instrumentals are fantastic, but the vocals are INSANELY bad. Only tracks I can even come back to are the ones where the bassist is singing. I'm not the kinda guy who gets too hung up on vocals being off-kilter or even shoddy or badly performed on a record, but this... absolutely fucking not. They don't even fit their sound at all, except on Western which has its moments but overall is a trainwreck of a track.

Diverse, chaotic and truly interesting instrumental work collides with vocals that are incredibly over the top and very hit (sometimes) or miss (often). The guitar work, song structures and general direction of the music is great. Utilizing whacky time signatures, heavy dissonance and seemingly improvised track flow and still creating understandable, coherent songs is the thing black midi should be revered for here. Bass, drum and guitars all really nail it playing super complex music and not losing the listener and overall just sounding super tight and focused. Unfortunately the vocals on half of the tracks are way too over the top and dramatic. bmbmbm features some of the funniest lyrics and vocal delivery in an album that (I assume) is serious to date (the various ways he says purpose, ffs). Similar effects in Reggae and Western, the vocals just remove from the experience too much and overshadow the great craftsmanship in the backing tracks. Near DT, MI is a true SOTY candidate and the album has many great moments but it seems like this vocalist moves with too much of a purpose.

Thoroughly self-aware kooky album that pulls a fucktonne of stylistic influences into one whirlpool of noise and punk, so much so that idiots everywhere will cry of pretentiousness or "but they learnt it not lived it" or whatever.

Sweet experimental post-punk ish record, but didn't impress me too crazily. Tbf I was
interrupted in the middle and I was expecting something harsher so I will have to give it a
second chance anyway. Lots of peeps seem to have an issue with the vox but I found them
nice and fitting. The middle of the record was best, with 4's cool explosion, 5 being a jam
with a bouncy midtrack and the record's general experimental approach paying off the most,
and 6 boasting a cool post-punk atmosphere with electronic bits and lost of jammy bits,
especially the second half - although it's a shame it ends on a fadeout. The rest of the
record after that is cool rock-ish post-punk with a lot of bounce. 8 goes aggressively
crazy in a The Body sort of way, but the end of 9 is less successful at the craziness and
the bulk of the track doesn't work too well either despite the fun bounce initially. The
early record reminded me more of 90s bands like Slint and Unwound, and 1-3 are all quite
cool and boast fun experimentation. But overall I'm still only half convinced by this 3.6

In a world of chaos, Black Midi turns their music into magic, and their emotions into earthquakes. By taking elements of Progressive Rock for the evolution of their songs, Punk for the unconventional aspects of Noise Rock for the tortured side, as well as many other sounds, they have created a sound that is unique, original and amazing. On several occasions, I think back to Bowie, in madness, genius, weirdness but also in the voice. It's an imperfect voice and way of singing, but for me it's totally in phase with the instrumentation. It's stunning. It may not become a classic, but it is a must for 2019.

Disorientating in the best way, the muddle of sounds and styles on display here kept me on my toes for the whole record and the campy vocals are just another curveball in Black Midi's repertoire of expectation-defying characteristics.
