The album I had absolutely no idea was happening but the album I very much needed. David Berman
is back and on top of his game. The masterful songwriter returns to familiar but rejuvenated
thematic territory - songs soaked with solitary self-reflection, penned with his trademark black
humor and wit; the perfect soundtrack to wandering unfamiliar streets by yourself in a foreign
country, to sitting at a bar nearing closing time, contemplating making that phone call but
ultimately deciding against it, to writing in a cheap motel room but scrapping everything and
going to bed, unsatisfied but not defeated.

An album younger than a few decades needs to really be something else for me to call it a classic, but here we are. This is about the most classic and quintessentially 2010s material that may be out there ever.

I don't know anything about Dave Berman, but I know Purple Mountains' backing band, Woods. It's thus no surprise that, musically, it tackles alt-country tropes, with as much folk as rock. Lyrically, well, this is heavy as shit. Please warn me when a happy country record is out y'all. Still, the music is generally upbeat, but do not mask how much pain is poured in the lyrics. RIP.

Purple Mountains is a very good album, it presents a set of beautiful folk songs, all with a particularity. You shouldn't rely on a first listening that gives a good result but nothing more, because in the line of listening you will attach yourself to each of the tracks. Sometimes you will let yourself be invaded by instrumental solos, sometimes by medolies, sometimes by texts, sometimes you will take everything for yourself
