Zappa's best album, plain and simple. This weird, caustic, hilarious diatribe on everything that was wrong with psychedelia is inspired from start to finish, even down to the fact that amidst the chaos and the jokes, there's some flat-out brilliant songs - "What's The Ugliest Part of Your Body?" and "Who Needs The Peace Corps?" are the best of the bunch. But it's the in-jokes, the relentless silliness, and the genuine bitterness underpinning most of this that makes it both one of the best records of the '60s, and one of the greatest concept albums ever. It was an important stepping stone in the history of sampling in popular music, too.

Unbelievably political and absurdly wise for what is at face value one of the stupidest things you?ve ever heard. Musically for me it doesn?t cross the boundary FULLY from weird to excellent, like trout mask replica or even hot rats, but still highly rated for its profundity and timelessness

So... a parody of Sgt Pepper? For 40 minutes? I honestly spent nearly 20 minutes waiting for the album to start before realising that these tuneless nursery rhyme soundscapes are all that "We're Only In It For The Money" are.

Time has given this a savage treatment. This sure was adventurous and relevant when it came out. Well, not anymore. Now it's mostly aimless noise fuckery, jokes that get old at the second spin and endless brabbling that must have been just as annoying in the 60s as it is now. I bet, if every rating backed with the notion of "well it was ground-breaking at the time" (which doesn't really affect anyone's enjoyment of it, honestly) would be removed, this album would fall in the mid-3 area at most. And even then, I would call it overrated. - 3.0

Zappa's social commentaries on this record initially seem daring & rebellious as he waves his freak flag high. The undiluted
sarcasm and general weirdness that follows is often more irritating than amusing. Of course, this was likely his original
intent. I much prefer the more polished musicianship and more incisive commentaries he made later in his career to the more
juvenile musings of The Mothers of Invention. An interesting artifact, but not something I would want to listen to very often.
Highlights: "Who Needs The Peace Corps?" & "Let's Make The Water Turn Black".

None of the songs particularly work for me on their own. However, it is a very good listen all the way through, each song working into another so well that they may as well not be seperate songs. But it's not an album you can jump into at certain parts, and it must be heard all the way through to get a proper look at it's satirical, musical genius of sorts.
