A rare find in not only power metal but music as a whole, The Black Halo is an album that more than defies expectations. To call this power metal doesn't do it justice - Kamelot take the straightforward metal formula and add their impressive control of dynamics within brilliantly tight but uncomplicated songwriting and musicianship. Top this all off with perfectly complementary keyboards and a singer whose voice reflects his classical training in every positive way, and you have The Black Halo in a nutshell. On a near perfect album, it's intimidating to pick highlights, but the vocal tour-de-force "Abandoned" and orgasmic 9 minute monster "Memento Mori" end up being the defining moments here. There are flaws, yes, but they're so incredibly minute that it hardly even matters. Finally, this is part two of a double concept album, and even that is executed extremely well.
If there are power metal albums better than this, they're about as rare as the Fountain of Youth.

I thought that epica was the best thing to happen to metal. On the black halo they basically improved every aspect of epica. Just awesome.

Kamelot follow up Epica with an album that finds a great balance of overall enjoyability and solid music to boot. Most of the album is incredibly catchy and addicting, but it's not done in a way that makes the music feel like a gimmick. Even the weaker songs tend to have a moment or two that helps them stand up and avoid detracting too much from the overall quality. Other than these points and the still less-than satisfactory interludes, The Black Halo proves itself an excellent power metal album that can even appeal to those who find the genre too over-the-top.

One of the best power metal albums ever made, the melodies absolutely soar, definitely Kamelot's shining moment, Khan's voice suit's their style of power metal easily, without resorting to operatic wails, which are pretty much non existent on this album, it's a shame the following albums fall short, although they did have their moments.

I think that this is one of the best power/symphonic metal albums ever released, as well as one of the best albums overall. The songs are heavy, melodic, tight, emotional, driven, and amazing.

I almost gave up with Kamelot after their three releases: Eternity, Siege Perilous and Dominion. Dominion was the first album recorded with Khan at vocals. For me, as a big Conception fan, was a big disappointment. The production was a mess (in fact the album seems a demo tape) and the songs was really weak. In the war against the greatest power metal bands from Europe Kamelot never would won a battle if they insisted in that direction. Then an internet friend sent me The Fourth Legacy (2000), second release with Khan and the first one recorded in Germany with the wizard Sascha Paeth. I put it in the cd player without any hope... But what I heard changed everything. The intro "New Allegiance" and "The Fourth Leagacy" shocked me in the same way that I turned crazy with the firsts songs in Painkiller (Judas Priest) album. The sound was terrific and the magnificent Khan voice shined clear and powerful. The album was full of nuances and had the most precious ballad I ever heard: "A Salyorman's Hymn". Then, with "The Black Halo" the music seemed supernatural to me. The prog and symphonic elements flew magically all around and Thomas Youngblood played hard, heavy and soft as ever did it before. The rock opera, based in the classic Faust's myth, has several top moments of song writing and production. "March of Mephisto" with the devil himself (Shagrath) as guest is a little cathedral of metal; "The Haunting" with Simone Simons is superlative, but the grand finale comes with "Memento Mori". Khan, who learned to sing in an opera school music, is the only one who can lead such a magnum opus. Youngblood finally understood who is the band genius and accepted a secondary role, a difficult decision to made by a lead guitar!
