There was a fear- oh, about six or seven years ago now- that Chinese Democracy, were it ever to actually see the light of day, would turn out to be nothing but an album full of metaphors involving countries and proud ancient races: 'The Blues' (re-printed here as 'Street Of Dreams') the only respite from your Madagscars, your Chinese Democracies, yer Riads and, naturally, your Bedouins. Yet while Axl remains hopelessly self-absorbed, he has never been noted for his lyrical prowess, and Chinese Democracy was always going to be judged on one thing and one thing alone: the solos. Buckethead is Buckethead- though his best contribution is probably the acoustic ambience that underpins 'Sorry'- but the real star here is Robin Finck, whose impossibly wide bends on 'There Was A Time''s extended outro are easily the match of Slash's classic air raid siren on 'November Rain.' There are a couple of duds-'This I Love' could be a bizarre parody of the song from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, while 'Scraped' sounds like something Perry Farrell would scare his kids with- but even at 70 minutes it's easily more consistent than either of the Illusions. And, dare I say it, more focused as well?

the latest installment from guns N' Roses, although it has taken a lifetime to be released, is brillaint. you could never say it has lived up to expectations, but as an indipendant album not comparing it with Appetite for Destruction, i think every track was brilliant. tracks like Shackler's Revenge, Better , Madagascar and Prostitute make this album brillaint, with nice guitar work. i would say it sounds like a Axl Rose album like a few people have said in the media, but its a Bloody Good "Axl Rose" Album! Five Stars.

This album opens up with the first 2 tracks seeming to be of guns n roses normal standard which i expected but then it quickly starts to deteriorate into a lifeless and bland album, axl roses voice sounds completely fake and pitch corrected just like ozzy osbourne's does in all his new stuff and the whole album has been completely over worked, overall it turned a hopeful prospect of a musical masterpiece into album worthy of a bargain bucket!

The new album from The Axl Rose & Friends band.
It's strongest and weakest points are it's overproduction, there are lots of nuances of sound esp. through headphones but it's constant layering and drowning in effects could be considered a bit much. Cheap, airy distortion and vocals can be somewhat offputting, but despite that what is on offer is a surprisingly varied mix of music that edges from hints of the classic gunners rock of old to your standard piano ballads and an industrial-metal edge to some of the tracks.
The sum of it's parts are probably better then the songs as a whole, but during the more impressive sections I am almost tempted to say the wait has been worth it.

In retrospect, this should of not really reserved the paddling that it got, it holds up decently well and there was quite a bit of creativity in the project. I understand that the constant turmoil ruined what could been but it is still a pretty damn good album all things considered

Many fans saw the USE YOUR ILLUSION set as a bit overblown, but at least it had some great songs to redeem Axl's
megalomaniacal ambitions. CHINESE DEMOCRACY is immaculately produced and contains a few mind melting guitar solos
along the way. It's an overly ambitious attempt to eclipse the ILLUSION albums, but lacks any of the streetwise
charm or Stones-ish swagger that made their earlier work so appealing to their fans. Instead, Axl Rose steers his
new cohorts in a more modern direction, borrowing liberally Industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails for inspiration.
I've listened to this many times and have never grown even the slightest bit fond of this collection of songs.
CHINESE DEMOCRACY just leaves me feeling cold and indifferent towards this incarnation of Guns 'N Roses who can't
hold a candle to the original lineup. In trying so hard to prove their technical proficiency here, it just seems
this band is completely missing the point of why their fans once adored them so much. Regardless of how much money
was spent, how well produced the album is or even how slick the new guitarists are, this album is inevitably a
soulless failure.

Far from the trainwreck is could have been. Buckethead's playing is incredible ("Better," "Riad N' the Bedouins"), Axl's vocals are unique and engaging and his high notes are remarkable ("I.R.S."), and songs like "Shackler's Revenge," "Sorry," and the aforementioned "Riad N' the Bedouins" are fantastic. It may not live up to the impossible expectations constructed from its ten year production term, and not all of the songs are good, but Chinese Democracy is overall a worthwhile listen. The truly exceptional guitar work is the star of the album.

I think the album is fair. If I were considering the time and money that went into it with giving my rating, it would have been a 0.0. However, looking at the album itself without all of the drama, I think it's ok, but there's not a song on here as good as anything on Appetite for Destruction.

In the end this is just an album. And quite a good album actually. Great songs really, and Axl sounds fantastic. The only things that might be in one's way to enjoying this, are expectations and reservations (when talking GN'R).

Insanely underrated, sure its not the hard rocking genius of Appetite but it does prove that Axl dosent need Izzy or Slash to make some good music. It moves from industrial metal through classic GN'R hard rock to piano based ballads. More consistent than either of the Illusions but not better overall. Not the most well loved album but I'm close to saying its worth the wait

Plain awful they were trying to blend in with newer metal bands it came out horrible the singer sounds horrendous in all of the songs it just doesn't mix granted that the music is good but the singing just isn't right, but i think that there old stuff like sweet child o mine and welcome to the jungle were way better.

Axl's back with a new band but the same name and it is, for lack of a better word, rockin'. So it doesn't have Izzy writing some classics (an absence that is glaringly obvious) nor Slash chugging out those heavy bluesy solos. But what it lacks in band members it makes up for in pure rocking goodness. 4/5

This album is by no means a masterpiece, if anything it is a disappointment. But all too often when something disappoints people are quick to exaggerate about the actual product. Chinese Democracy is far from terrible, but because people were expecting Appetite for Destruction Pt. 2 they quickly wrote it off as a bad album.
Overall this album is a great accomplishment. For me the title track was if not the best, at least one of them. It was one hell of an opening track, that's for sure. My personal favorites are "Better", "Riad N The Bedouins", and "This Is Love". Overall the album was a good listen, and the songs I listed I find catchy as hell, but I was kind of hoping for more.

i remember being 15 and a huge gnr fan because gnr just came out with their album appetite for destruction. this album does not come even close to matching the joy i experienced from having guilty pleasure listening to this. i dont know if this album sucks or not. it just doesnt sit well with me.

Chinese Democracy shows some of the most creativity from Axl that any has ever seen, experimenting with some industrial influences and some electronics, even synths. Yet, Chinese Democracy still works as a cohesive whole because of the army of guitarists working on the album. Most of the solos are done by Buckethead or Finck, and to be rather vague, they fucking slay. Not to say this has it's duds, it does, but Chinese Democracy is a new and interesting album from the veteran band Guns N Roses.

Lost in the "Garden" again. This is no "Use Your Illusion," but all of the melody and hard rock touchstones are still present. It's obvious that Axl's voice is going with his age, not to mention the absence of Slash is heartbreaking...But it's still Guns N' Roses. And I'm still impressed.

A long wait. And what is there to show?
Well, an album that has some easy to be classics, and few tracks that come across as JUST filler. Some heavy riffs, nice melodies, a few slower songs, and you've got a Guns N' Roses album that, while new, and mostly Axl that is, at least thus far in my listening, easily as good as its predecessors but with a more modern sound. But I mean hey, the 80's are over, shaking away that sound only makes sense.
Best song goes to "Madagascar" for being truly awesome, and in my mind at least, a classic up with "Sweet Child...", "Welcome To The Jungle" and "November Rain" and a fair few others.
Sadly, I can see this one being destroyed by the naysayers. Ahh well, those who appreciate it will appreciate it well, and those who have had their mind fairly set on hating this, will obviously hate it. Its more than I expected to say the least.
