Now that I've finally gotten to take a good listen, Rare Field Ceiling is officially my rblack metal AOTY so far. It's such a nuanced piece of music that brims with classic black rmetal energy while maintaining the individualistic flair that sets Yellow Eyes a step rabove their contemporaries. Most of all, you can feel the passion it took them to rcultivate this album, as it's imbued in every riff and necrotic snarl. It is a shining rexample of modern black metal, setting a standard that won't soon be beaten.

A dense exercise in pushing things to the limits of what is possible with chord work in atmospheric black metal. An unending barrage/wall of dissonant guitar harmonies/disharmonies with seemingly no end and very complex/wandering song structures. The song structures might feel too abstract at times if were another band in metal but the guitar work is just so interesting it doesn't make you want to be grounded by verse/chorus and comes off as very ritualistic. The vocals are also extremely desperate and haunting acting as some sort of guide in the loud madness. These guys are far beyond worth checking out live. They put a ton of effort into capturing their sound in a live setting and that immersion is wonderful with this sort of songwriting and instrumentation.

Few albums run as repetitive yet I'd have it no other way, as Yellow Eyes find the sweet spot between repetitive and hallucinogenic. There is a great deal of self-awareness and deliberation in the progressions, what with them tweaking the sound and instrumental twists ever so slightly to mess with your perception of a given track's passage. It is a trippy experience like bad drugs and withdrawal are. Disgusting and horrifying at every turn.
