this album was pretty good until somebody decided to put it on repeat about halfway through.

Wha... Wha- what is this?! So I put Every Time I Die's Gutter Phenomenon in my CD player, meanwhile enamored by the CD cover's awesome art. The first track comes on, I sit and enjoy (that term used loosely, by the way) and when the track ends, up starts another song that sounds way too much like it. I skip to the next track horrified. Same thing. Did they really loop the same song eleven times? That's what it sounds like to me. The CD contains very, very little variety, save for certain tracks like "Kill the Music," where everything is still the same, except the the solo is belted out by, of all people, My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way.
My God. Keith Buckley has no variety in his vocals. Yell. Yell. Yell ad nauseum. The guitars sound great, but suffer from the same lack of variety.
My favorite part of the CD is in "Bored Stiff," where after thirty seconds or so of his trademark, yell that reeks of banality, Buckley yells "Hey there! Ladies! I'm a cu**!"
Yes, yes you are, sir. Stay away, especially if you liked Hot Damn! like I did.

I've mostly been on the edge about Every Time I Die. On one hand, Hot Damn! is a fairly solid album, but the on the other hand, there's Gutter Phenomenon, which is too solid for it's own good, and grows too repetative way too fast. I do like the guitars on the album though, which sound a bit goofy to me at times, and slightly out of place with the mood of the songs, though still somehow fitting in nicely. I don't like the singer's voice all the much, especially when compared to Hot Damn!

On the surface, Every Time I Die seemed to dumb it down from their breakout record Hot Damn! to Gutter Phenomenon. The songwriting became more samey, and less complex as before. Yet, upon further examination, this all seems to be an expression of intent. Taking a look a Keith Buckley's lyrics for this record gives appropriate context for the music. The lyrics very cleverly deal with drunken revelries and reckless behavior that the catchy breakdowns and pronounced southern tone of the guitars echo, all while remaining tongue-in-cheek and slyly critical of said behavior throughout. This sense of irony is what makes Gutter Phenomenon a subtly intelligent metalcore/hardcore record, and though musically it doesn't really stand up to their previous opus, lyrically and conceptually it's one of the best, if not the best, albums the band has to their name.

It's a bit on the repetitive side, though Gutter Phenomenon is a relatively straightforward album with clever lyricism, raw, Southern-like undertones, and one helluva vocal performance from Keith Buckley.

Really catchy, groovy and fun album. Lyrically, Keith Buckley's at his peak, every song crammed full of literate, wordy and intelligent soundbites - just a shame that the band felt the need to turn everything else down a notch so he could be heard. In fact, it's only the thin, poppy production and token single "The New Black" that let this album down. Party metalcore.
