Nevermore's latest studio album, This Godless Endeavor is a combination of progressive and thrash metal. The album isn't a huge venture from anything that Nevermore have done in the past, but that's not really a bad thing now is it? Jeff Loomis' guitar work on the album is amazing, as he often goes off into minute long shred solos. Smyth is no slouch either, and he does much of the same, just at a slightly lower level that Loomis. The vocals on the album are what you would expect also. Warrel Dane's unique voice is all over the album, and his lyrics are more "intelligent" than ever. The drumming and bass are superb, as they have been on all of Nevermore's previous releases. His double bass is strong, smooth, and never takes away from the songs as a whole. The fills are progressive, and the drumming is innovative overall. The bass does a fine job of keeping up with the guitars, and helps to create a powerful wall of sound. All in all, Nevermore have managed to produce another near classic album that is as enjoyable to listen to as it is perplexing.

Nevermore is one of the most under appreciated bands out there today. Their songwriting, music, and riffs are genius. I love how loomis blazes through diminished scales during solos, which gives these songs such a panicky, dreadfully awesome mood. The riffs that these guys invent are some of the ballziest ive ever heard. And what a drummer Van is, goddamn. I'd say this is their best album so far. I've listened to this cd countless times and i still enjoy every minute of it. Bravo, Nevermore.

Oh dear. Once upon a time, Nevermore were probably the finest metal band on the planet, the twin genre classics of Dreaming Neon Black and Dead Heart In A Dead World making them arguably the most essential band to look out for. It wasn't beyond the realms of possibilty that they might blow up Metallica style. Yet, with Enemies of Reality, they skipped straight to the St. Anger stage with a lazy, badly produced album that felt like it was being made by an awful tribute band. This Godless Endeavor is better than that, but not by much. I wanted this to be good, and I gave it chance after chance, but the reality is that not a single moment here seems like it was written by a band capable of ever recapturing the heights of their masterpieces. It all feels insipid and derivative, and it find it hard to believe that these guys really care that much any more. Where's the spirit? Where's the fire? Where's the ability, even? Their most obvious weapons - Dane's voice and Loomis' guitar solo - are muted here, with neither of them attaining the heights we know they're capable of. I still hope Nevermore can get back to their best, but this record has convinced me that they won't. And that depresses me.

Nevermore's latest effort. Everyone seems to hail it as a masterpiece, but I beg to differ. First off, Nevermore has never played poorly and this album is proof of their experience. Every song is masterfully performed. However, that's where everything begins to fall apart. Right from the beginning you can tell Warrel Dane's voice has lost much of its timbre, and the poor lyrics don't help much either. Seriously, tossing in random metaphors and ranting "Death, consume, conform, suffering" does not a good album make. Musically, each song moves along well, and Nevermore has made sure not to be as repetitive as they occasionally are. However, there's just something about this album and how Nevermore has used this same philosophy over and over that makes it unimpressive. It just gets down-right annoying.

Another really good and progressive album with some great melodic vocals. There are some really incredible solos on here too. Pretty fantastic overall.

This is probably their finest album. This Godless Endeavor has many highlights like Born, My Acid Words, Bittersweet Feast or the title track. Great record.

On This Godless Endeavor, Nevermore release a debatably more accessible album while retain their progressive thrash sound. More melodic and singing hooks comprise the music, with opening track "Born" being a structural staple for the entire album. The themes and music feels much more contrived than previous works, including Dreaming Neon Black and The Politics of Ecstasy, but everything is still functional here. As with many similar changes for other bands, the increase of catchiness here turns out to be what helps and hinders the album, simultaneously. It might be easier to enjoy the songs because of this, but there's less of the dark, bleak and vigorous nature that made their earlier albums so great.

At first I was unsure if I should listen to this. I misjudged Nevermore as a very mediocre metal band, but I decided to give it a shot. What happens on the first track? Bone-crushing riffs, solid strong music, and dark vocals that give the album an evil, powerful atmosphere. And as the album progresses, I realise how kick-ass Jeff Loomis is, and how the melodies progress so fluently. Amazing piece of metal album.
