3.0 good | McP3000 | November 5th 08 | Envy side was kind of a disappointment in my eyes. All three songs featured fairly standard post rock song structures. The first song had Japanese spoken word, which worked against the song, and the heavy post-hardcore build up at the end of the second song felt severely out of place. The third Envy song was by far the best, but still nothing that great.
As for Jesu, the first song takes a fairly standard, yet still good, Jesu idea and played it for way too long. 13 minutes of an electronica heavy loop, with only mild guitar distortion leads to a song twice as long as it should be. Nearly every other Jesu song over 10 minutes surpasses this one. However, the second Jesu track completely saves the split in my opinion. A fantastic , heart-warming track that still keeps the nihilistic attitude of past Jesu releases. The double bass buildup towards the end was definitely the kicker, seeing as its something Broadrick hasn't yet tried with his new project thus far.

0.0 | handoman | October 8th 08 | This 5 song ep is my first experience with both Envy and Jesu. I really didn't know what to expect with this. This split left me both intrigued and wanting more with these bands.
Envy starts off the ep with a 5 minute post rock track with ambient guitars, some electronic beats, and no vocals. Well, actually the only vocals to be heard are the spoken Japanese words throughout the entire song. This was very surprising to me. I was expecting them to be a lot harder and in your face, instead they had a lot more melody and ambiance in these three songs. Envy's last song of the ep, Life Caught In The Rain, is definitely a stand out track. It contains more of a soft rock feel with less ambiance, and more guitar, bass, and drums. It has more spoken words that lead to a harder, louder chorus that I was expecting from them. Their catchy screaming blended beautifully with the music, which created an epic feeling. I can safely say that after listening to their half of the ep, I will definitely check these guys out a little more.
On the other side of the split, there's Jesu. I have to admit they disappointed me a little. They start with the 13 minute song "Hard To Reach". I couldn't help but to lose interest during this song. Even as the synth strings and vocals came in, they still didn't grab my attention. Not until their second and final track I start to realize their beauty. This is such a simple song that creates such a beautiful atmosphere. I guess you can say I have mixed feelings about these guys, but will not stop me from looking more into them.
