At this point it's just decent accessible sludge rock/metal-lite. The production is notoriously bad, Baizley's shout-singing is the same as ever only slightly more off-key, and there are way too many short tracks and interludes that make the whole thing feel kind of awkward. There are some great Baroness tracks here to be sure--as there are on every album of theirs--but in terms of consistency I'm not really feeling it here.

I think this album is better digested as a whole. After listening to it a few times I gained a stronger appreciation for the singles (which I enjoyed before, regardless). Also the issues with the production are overstated, but I agree that you need to go into some of the high energy tracks with some expectations.

Gave up about 2/3 of the way through. Absolute mismash of noise, with weird acoustic breaks, songs with no lyrics and almost nonsencical bordering on atmospheric doom levels of just blank noise. Pretty trash.

I can't give this a number in good faith... There's some great concepts coming from this album, but it's being held back by its own presentation. Believe me when I say that I formed thoughts on this well before fantano reviewed it. I can't stand the mixing one bit. You don't need to be an audiophile to notice it because it's basically playing at a constant 128 kbps equivalent. Horribly grating, especially when they needed that space for the many layers they stack on top of each other.

Gold & Grey is a very good concept album showing all the power of one of the best Sludge bands of the last 2 decades. Like Yellow & Green, this album is long and has passages that could have been avoidable especially towards the middle/end (it's running out of steam a little bit + the single Bordelines a little too dusty for my taste) or on a few interludes too many. It is always the complexity and difficulty of concept albums. But this one is more successful than his 2012 friend (even if he doesn't really have a major Hit in comparison) because the band manages to make this work atypical and epic thanks to its experience.

Despite the ill-fitting production and an overabundance of interlude tracks, Gold & Grey is
still a fitting swan song for Baroness' colour spectrum themed albums, with some of their best
tracks of their career to date. If you don't think 'Tourniquet' is one of the best songs they've ever
put to record, you're crooked (mile, lmao).

This would probably be their best album were it not for the production. It is so comprehensively terrible and distracting I can't give this any higher of a rating. Which is too bad because the songwriting is generally great and they pull off genre-hopping in a way they were never able to before.

The mixing isn't great (as expected) but it really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. In fact, the poor mix actually adds to the album's atmosphere. Hard to say this would be better experience than a proper mixing though.
