| 3.5 great | TheManMachine | May 21st 19 | Impassive vox and rigidity make their post-punk plain compared to oh say Idles, but unembellished precision and Irish-dry demeanor aptly appeal. Groove and buildups perpetually vital, raggedy rock conspiring with clarity+momentum, choruses that call for shoutalongs they would never dare orchestrate. Maybe most standout however is a capacity for moving calm-downs: with sarcastic sounding "I'm gonna be big" and "sha sha sha"s the first impression is irony; formally forsaken by the effortless melodic punch of "Television Screens" and beckon-back to when he was "a cool cool kid" whose eyes were evergreen instead of dead. Heck, the ender could close a pub.

| 4.4 superb | Erwann S. EMERITUS | July 20th 21 | Dan Careycore shit, but these boiz didn't get shit on - maybe their Irish accent and their earnestness translate of their non-privileged status - in contrast to their peers from private art schools. Dogrel is the work of a bored youth transforming their ennui into a romantic - but never foolish - rage that can convey both gloom and optimism. What more can you ask from post-punk?

| 3.0 good | fran tall ear | December 3rd 19 | promising. nice spread of indie family genres. needs more lyrics and less overhead cymbal crashing because i don't think the music wants to be hypnotic - keep me engaged! these guys could make an album that'd sit alongside Art Objects "Bagpipe Music" as one of the great, cool post-punk poet discs if they really wanted to

| 4.5 superb | Doublez38 | November 26th 19 | Post Punk is still doing as well as ever and is constantly evolving and seems to be inexhaustible in terms of resources (for a style that is already more than 40 years old), 2 years ago we had Protomartyr, in 2018 IDLES, and this year it seems to be that of Fontaines DC. Dogrel is vibrating, it is compact, at the same time committed, sometimes knowing how to be fun, diversified and each listening is great and makes it more and more endearing. Grian Chatten's voice and interpretation are incredible and embellish the group's fantastic work. The group has a real identity and applies their Irish culture. The writing is strong and striking. We're on some memorable, real things.

| 4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | June 11th 19 | Post punk that often leans towards rock and the artsy side of punk with a distinct vocal style, great instrumentation from the entire lot and great variation in their songwriting approach. The vocalist is the first thing to face on Dogrel. Grian Chatten is blunt in his approach often using a more talking approach but this only serves to accentuate when he delves further into melodies. His lyrics, while often very repetitive, evoke interest and thought and come off as poetic; something to dive into and figure out. Dublin City Sky highlights his storytelling ability. Beyond Grian are some talented musicians. The guitars utilize many different tones and are key in creating dynamic textures to compliment the vocals. The bass is standout as well often carving out its own place separate from the guitars and vocals but never becoming distracting. Last and opposite of least is the arsenal of approaches Fontaines DC takes on. Each and every single song is a unique track and they never rely on the same songwriting formula track to track. They have energetic tunes, more meditate melancholy downers and everything in between, all executed very successfully. Liberty Belle, Dublin City Sky, Roy's Tune and Too Real are excellence.
