Based on the tracks available, this album should be amazing. "Crimson Stars" is particularly
fantastic; the riffs have this majestic yet dark melodicism about them. It? gorgeous with a sense
tension, a pretty thrilling combo. It definitely has that DsO quality inherent to the
Icelandic scene but repurposed into something uplifting. There's really not much else to say at
this point other than I am super excited for the whole thing to come out.
Edit: Listened, and the rest of the album is amazing. Strikes an amazing balance between melody
and maelstrom.

The album's good, but average seems a little out of control right now. There is just too many bands out there aping deathspell's sound that this one seems like it's gonna get lost in the shuffle. They are not imperial triumphant or even Svartidauði if you want to keep it icelandic. The chaos of the riffs feel like they are coming more from the amount of reverb, than the actual guitar work, and the melodies aren't catchy enough to stand out in any meaningful way, unlike Kaleikr's latst effort. It just feels so middle of the road from something that is trying so hard to be challenging. Sorry so make this mostly about negative when I really do like the album, I just don't want people to get the wrong impression from the scores

Hvísl stjarnanna is that kind of album that really impresses for the first few listens but then loses its magic with further inspection. Sinmara have a tight sound showing off guitar work that balances the dissonant and melodic through heavy layering of leads upon chord progressions to build atmosphere and add depth to the music. They also have a drummer who adds a lot to the mix especially in their heavy use of multiple cymbals in almost every beat. What is wrong despite this tight sound? The album as a whole just feels like it is in the same gear and direction constantly. It feels like 90% of it is driven with uptempo double bass beneath a myriad of guitar leads and melodies with the same guttural yell from the vocalist. While they have the atmosphere nailed down there really isn't tension from riff to riff and section to section and when there is, like in "Crimson Stars," it is the best part of the album. Good black metal but Hvísl Stjarnanna doesn't produce many classic moments or differentiate itself enough from similar BM projects out there today.

There's music that explores new frontiers; music that explores diverse styles and influences, and there's simply good music, which expresses the feeling, energy and artistic value of a group of musicians at a certain moment in time. You don't have to be an Einstein to figure out where Hvisl Stjarnanna fits. Great album.
