4.5 superb | Doublez38 | July 21st 19 | Assume Form is a very important evolution, a real level of progress creatively and humanely for James Blake. The album begins with the depression and doubts the artist felt before, as usual in comparison with these old efforts, then continues on to loneliness and instability before quickly transforming into a remarkable romantic work. rIt is a fact, his current love relationship to give birth to Assume Form. Very strong moments in the opus are confronted with songs bewitched by a little less important love without ever tiring my attention and it is something that very few artists know how to do... the work of the singers/rappers guests and producers is an essential ingredient to the success of this one. We do not have here the best of the best he could have done, but we have a new facet of a man, who has gone from "lack of trust and anxiety" to a liberating and more appeased man, from deconstruction to rebirth.

3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | March 22nd 19 | Assume Form blends R&B with some pop elements, trap beats and James Blake's vocal talents to create an album about love that feels very sentimental and has a bittersweet and lush atmosphere. What is really well done here? The guest bits from Andre 3000, Travis Scott and Rosalia add a ton of depth to the content as each guest has a unique personality and James Blake really fits them all into the tracks they were given perfectly. Blake uses his vocals and vocal layering really well to keep things very interesting on the singing front. He has passionate vocals at times, sweet harmonies, a less singing more talking approach at times and it really makes a big difference keeping things fresh. The atmosphere is also a highlight as it feels spacey and dark/bittersweet, something that contrasts the R&B beats and vocals quite nicely. The things holding it back? The theme of the album being so constant and the atmosphere basically being the same for the entire runtime. A lot of the tracks just have the same overall feel to them despite most of them being really good. Also, at times the lyrics (Power On comes to mind) aren't all that convincing and Assume Form just feels like it is lacking a signature, true standout track. Lots of great ones but it is missing that single that you will remember forever.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | February 19th 19 | Coercing him a bit more out of the sad electro-soul shadows are Metro+MCs with doses of midnight bounce and Rosalia for a duet so warm-n-delicate it sounds like they're slow-dancing. However the true boost here by far is Blake's newfound partaking in mutual love and companionship -- all at once giddy, reluctant, open, bashful; a burgeoning repentant recluse calmly in awe. Forever the fragile and frigid fellow, his hopefulness and happiness and capacity for a life-change feels cozy but careful, readily summoning the gorgeous and romantic but has trouble moving past hesitance and the bewilderment that he ever got here in the first place. Choice assessments for when you stop being a ghost in a shell and fall for another human being: "Now you can feel everything / Doesn't it seem more natural?", "When you can't believe your luck / You're with a friend", "I thought I might be better dead but I was wrong", "Let's go home and talk shit about everyone."

2.0 poor | Monheim | February 10th 19 | James Blake seems content in writing emotionally vapid, musically dull, lyrically trite ballads and my annoyance at this steep and aggressive downward spiral of his career grows with each empty, boring release of his. His debut album and handful of early EPs may end up being the only good music he ever releases

3.5 great | Chino smoking it up! | January 24th 19 | always cool how this fella does hip-hop, going through DaftPunk's (auto)tunes to late Radiohead's experimentation. I like it. The big loss here is when the production and experimentation goes over the music and it gets a bit random. Recd Tracks - Assume Form; Tell Them; Where's the Catch.

4.5 superb | ArthurTheAnteater | January 22nd 19 | great album. kinda surprised with the mixed reactions here but this is honestly a great album. his
foray into maximalism lands him with some of his best production yet, something that he couldn't
achieve at all on TCIA when he tried to expand his sound palette. his introspection and slight
nods to insecurity really elevate the album. love the features too. the track with moses sumney is
a slight dud, but the rest are great tracks. ESPECIALLY ill come too.

4.0 excellent | notkanyewest | January 22nd 19 | His self-titled is one of my favorites of the decade, but I felt like the last two were lacking. Here,
he strikes a tremendous balance between his pop-leaning and experimental impulses, and there's
a real emotional heft in the record's most powerful moments. ("Barefoot In The Park", "Can't
Believe The Way We Flow", "Lullaby For My Insomniac)

4.0 excellent | JesusCage | January 21st 19 | James Blake, makes another smooth album, this time with some more immediate tracks (specially the ones with features).
The highlights for me, tho, are the ones where he maintains some of is old persona ('Don't miss it' 'i'll come too'
