The band plays decently, and the lyrics are mostly all right. However, the vocals are absolutely horrible and ruin everything. This is a shame because Cirith Ungol seem like they could have been better if they had a different singer.

Cirith Ungol likely stands as my favourite doom metal band of all time. This particular album, King of The Dead, is (in my humble opinion) their magnum opus. The only criticisms I have are the robotic guitar tone, and the... unique vocals of Tim Baker. Once you become accustomed to these idiosyncrasies, you can fully enjoy this simply astounding band. The title track--with its subtle Rush-esque progressions and ominous build--as well as standouts such as "Master of The Pit", "Black Machine", and "Atom Smasher" cement this LP as one of the greatest of the subgenre.

Great album. A combination of doomy slow passages, and NWOBHM melodies and energy, Cirith Ungol are a very interesting band. They combine the elements very well to create an occult atmosphere. Props for covering Bach too.

The best I'm willing to offer this album is a "good" rating. I do see value in songs like "Black Machine", "Master Of The Pit" and "Toccata in Dm" and can somehow manage to disregard Baker's yelling long enough to groove on the music. Still, this album can be challenging in the same way as a King Diamond record and won't be welcome in everyone's CD player. KING OF THE DEAD is probably best heard when stoned so you can suspend rational judgments for a spell. I guess I should be thankful that I can still find something worthwhile in albums that would drive my wife straight up the wall in less than 10 seconds. You'll never know when you need to whip something like this out, so I'll be sure to keep KING OF THE DEAD handy when the need arises.
