This band has come on leaps and bounds since the fairly lackluster debut. Consistent songwriting, progressive musicianship, beautiful inclusion of folk instrumentation (the brilliance of that mid-section during "Death", for example) and Anna Murphy's vocal delivery is spot on. The band also kill it live, as proven by their support slot to Katatonia earlier this year.

This is the perfect substitute for those who long the best days of The Gathering as in essence, it sounds like a modernized version of Nighttime Birds which is not only due to Anna Murphy whose vocals sounds like they are directly influenced by Anneke van Giersbergen. Lots of vocal hooks, memorable moments, a great sense of melody and most of all, solid songwriting.

I don't know Eluveitie, so I can't tell if the album is a copy paste from the past, however it seems obvious we're dealing with musicians who know how to write good music. Death, The Spell or Freeze are delightful songs.

A good story behind and an overall dark atmosphere don't already make a good album. 'The Spell'
unfortunately, is highly weird, at least in my opinion. I still prefer 'This is the Sound' by far.
Hopefully the upcoming Eluveitie's output will be better...
