Wow! Dream Theater comes in and drops a modern prog masterpiece! It really hold up with rtheir best work. Amazingly, the first three songs/first three singles are not the best rsongs here, in fact, I like everything afterward even more. They really hit the mark with rthis one and strengthened their legacy.

It's fine enough. The three singles were easily the weakest parts of the album... however nothing here really stood out too much. Barstool Warrior (funnily enough) was the best track followed closely by At Wit's End. The production has seen a huge step up from The Astonishing, the drums here back a huge punch and nothing is muddied too much. The solos are also Petrucci's best in ages, with some crazy technical ones and some melodic ones, its a nice balance that works well. This is one of those albums that I may go back to eventually, but after two listens I feel like I've already gotten all I can out of it. It's fine, but it isn't terribly memorable.

Best Dream Theater album since Black Clouds, consistent, not too wanky but also there's the
typical 11 minute song. Bangs hard when it needs to and keeps things interesting. Labrie is still
Labrie. All of them seem on the same page here.

While I do enjoy this album, it's hard not to feel like it comes off flat for too much of its runtime. Fall into the Light and S2N show off some fresh ground for the band, like with the former's modern-sounding, prog metal riffs, but even the latter feels like a shell of another, arguably better song, during part of its chorus (The Looking Glass). And while I enjoyed Out of Reach, it's not the most original attempt at a DT ballad. IMO, At Wit's End is the best song here, with great emotion and progression throughout, and a particularly strong performance by James LaBrie. On the other hand, Barstool Warrior and Room 137 are two of DT's worst songs to date, with their goofy lyrics and execution. Viper King was a bit of a pleasant surprise, though, and despite also being goofy, its great energy and out-there style make it work, somehow. The rest of Distance Over Time consists of simply decent enough, fairly standard, Dream Theater fare. Overall, the album is just a bit too uninspired to be a truly noteworthy release in the band's lengthy discography, but it does show that DT might have more gas left in the tank than their self-titled or The Astonishing let on. Oh, and thank god this one isn't 2+ hours long...

With Distance Over Time Dream Theater come back into form. Energy and heaviness are the dominant characteristics that compile a solid collection of prog metal tracks. I believe it is Mike Mangini's best moment in his 8-year spell with the band. Recommendations: "Fall Into The Light", "Pale Blue Dot", "Barstool Warrior", "Paralyzed"

Though not on par with the standards created by the early DT albums, Distance Over Time is still a good addition to their discography, especially after the abomination of the Astonishing. rThe album starts out strong, goes a little wayward in the mid-section but still manages to pull through at the end. "Paralyzed" and "Barstool Warrior" is what I've been listening to most from this album, currently.

The band isn't pushing any boundaries, but this is very solid for what it is. Haven't
enjoyed a DT album this much since Octavarium. Even LaBrie sounds good.

Just judging by the teaser, I think we might actually get heavier and better Dream Theater album ronce again. I'm pretty confident it's gonna be better than the last album. I really hope I won't rhave to change my rating.rEdit: I didn't have to change it, this is Dream Theater's best album since Train Of Thought.

Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy has been a directionless mess. It really felt like all the personality left with Mike and what we were left with was a group of music nerds that could craft a nice term paper on the nuances of musical masturbation, but that couldn't write an interesting song if their virginity depended on it. It didn't help that new drummer Mike Mangini was as boring and uninteresting as I've ever seen from a prog band; almost like the Shawn Drover of the progressive metal world. That's why "Distance Over Time" is such a surprise, because they've somehow managed to release a decent album with Portnoy. Easily shitting all over any other post-Mike Portnoy release,"Distance Over Time" not only manages to make Dream Theater interesting, it also manages to make the songs themselves the main focus with musicianship being a secondary driver (while still abundantly present). This results in an entire album full of actual songs that just so happens to feature some phenomenal musicianship. The only thing it couldn't do is make Mike Mangini's playing interesting.

A fun, but very safe album. No epic 10+ minute tracks (sorely missed) for the second album in a row! Mangini sounds solid, though his drums still could sound better. Pale Blue Dot is absolutely fantastic, and I am very happy to hear Myung so well in the mix!
