This band has the recurring habit of creating good songs and, as expected, Lotus keeps the tradition alive. It’s true that they rarely get out of their comfort zone, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Comparison to the last release, Lykaia, is incredibly appropriate as Soen stick to their guns, double down and push forward with their take on Prog Metal with heavy Opeth and Tool influences. The main things that become apparent after repeated listening is that Lotus lacks the addictive, catchy hooks that Lykaia but improves in terms of production and vocal delivery. Joel Ekelof knocks it out of the park and continues to be one of the more pleasant and passionate vocalists to listen to in this genre. The major issue here is the songwriting being very repetitive, especially if you look this as a bit of a softer continuation of Lykaia. The formula for the tracks is becoming very apparent and this is something Soen could really changeup to push their style further. That being said, the ebbs and flows and melodic ups and downs are still as powerful as ever and it is hard to call any song subpar here; there also aren't any bonafide classics here either. Any fan of prog metal/rock should give this its deserved spins.

Another solid album from Soen. The standout of this record is definitely Joel’s vocals. More so than any of their
past albums, he’s incorporated vocals hooks that almost have a pop sensibility to them. The way it blends with
the intricate music is something to behold. Truly some special moments. I can’t recall, in recent memory, where
I’ve heard a chorus as powerful as the one that closes Martyrs.

Really strong playing from the instrumentalists, great, if simple, song structure. Killer hooks, writing and pacing of each tune is superb. My only complaint is that it lacks a definitive sense of risk and identity that characterize the greatest albums. If they took more chances and went hard on ambition, these guys can easily make a 5/5 going forward.

It has taken multiple albums, but Lotus finally finds the band dropping the overt reliance on their influences and delivering the most original (and best sounding) release of their career. Whether that makes it their best release is up to individual interpretation, but I’d say it does. Lotus features some of the band’s catchiest songs as well as some of my favorite Soen riffs, along with the always exceptional rhythm section. The standout track is definitely “Martyrs” featuring an awesome opening riff, a powerful harmonized chorus, a chill mellow breakdown in the middle, and some great vocals through the verses.

I can't help but hear this album as being regressive in a few areas. Oh sure, the main vocalist is a TAD better (tracks 2, 3, and 7) but WHY do the instrumentals sound so 'meh' compared to their prior work? This is supposed to be 2010's prog metal TAKE SOME RISKS!

It annoys me how much similar to Lykaia this is. Opponent and Sectarian are almost superposable, same structure same vibe same tonality even and both being opening tracks it's a blatant comparison . This said is not that i dislike it, i just hope they would evolve a little bit.
