While 'New Surrender' may not quite reach the individual heights of 'Cities', it is arguably more consistent with absolutely no filler. There are more of Stephen Christian's exceptional vocals & interesting lyrics, and more of Anberlin's up-tempo catchy rock. This time around, there may be more of an emphasis on the "catchy" side of things, with even a song about breaking hearts having a contagious upbeat feel to it. Yet, it is tracks 8-10 - a feel-good & uplifting trio of epic proportions - that really defines 'New Surrender' and makes it another winner from a dependable band that may be able to do no wrong. Recommended Tracks: Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights), Haight St., Disappear, Breaking & The Resistance.

Anberlin releases a truly superb album, in which almost every song is a highlight. While maintaining their catchy side, the band was able to create songs with a great deal of quality and consistency, with envolving atmospheres and significative lyrics. From the catchy Haight Street, to the nostalgic Misearbile Visu (ex malo bonum), Anberlin managed to create what surely is one of their most complete albuns. Recommended tracks: Haight St., Misearbile Visu (ex malo bonum), Soft Skeletons, Younglife, Disappear.

I don't know how to completely explain it, but this album hits home on so many levels... Lyrically. Anberlin has been a guilty pleasure of mine for quite a while. I hope and pray they continue to make music forever! In reality, that will never happen but I'm "old enough to know but to young to care." I do care but that lyric from Haight St. just kills... so does the rest of the song and the album.

I've always held the belief that Anberlin is much better the faster and more aggressive they are, because they're always going to have at least a slightly catchy chorus in their songs, and for me, catchiness is better loud. That's why I'm at an impasse with New Surrender. It stars out wonderfully enough with "The Resistance", but no song ever reaches that level of speed again on the record, save for the re-recorded "Feel Good Drag", which seems like a lazy choice for the band to make. The rest of the songs are pretty sparse and slower paced, which unfortunately leads to much of the record being somewhat boring. Don't get me wrong, there are some good songs in this style, namely "Soft Skeletons" and "Miserable Visu", which end the record on a great note, but on the whole things really aren't all that engaging. Overall, Anberlin's slowest album in their discography as of 2009 is a step backwards, but still a good listen in certain spots.

I was actually shocked by how consistently on par with Cities this album was. New Surrender, while not quite overtaking Cities as my favorite Anberlin album, totally blew away my expectations. I just thought that the lack of overall cohesion and a couple of lackluster tracks kept this one from becoming an all time classic.

Cities is one of my all-time favorite albums, and Fin* is one of my favorite songs. I think it would have been impossible for Anberlin not to disappoint with this. But their poppy slant, and lazy rehashing of Feel Good Drag as a single, did not do them any favors on an album that otherwise would have been quite good.

I dont see why people have a problem with this album. A great follow on from cities, whilst never reaching the heights of cities its still a great release and fun to listen to. Retrace, Breaking, The resistance are all great songs and worth a listen. Heck, with a voice like Stephen Cristians, they could pull anything off.
