Nah, that's it, I'm 5'ing this. The production is top fucking notch, the mix of metal, symphonic, and electronic is electric and the performances all around are superb. Every track has that one moment that makes me go "fuck this is so good". Classic album

Honestly I wasn't thrilled and won over by Empath, I understand that it could please the metal player or prog fan, it's super well produced, Devin Townsend is a great multi instrumentalist, but unfortunately all too often I found that it was just smoke and mirrors. I find that you are swayed by it everywhere, wanting to be epic but almost systematic I gradually pass to love, but there are some things missing that I can't describe. Besides, I didn't like the Disney style incorporation, it loses all its charm. It's still a good album though

Whenever DT goes the extra mile to pointlessly praise an album before its release, you know something fishy is going to happen. And it happened. This is DT literally venturing into Disney music (the metal variety). He came close on previous albums to this sound/songwriting, but he was inspired enough to pull more creative tunes, not these mostly boring, cringy tunes. No terrific tracks, 3 decent ones (Borderlands, Requiem and Adrift) and a totally worthless bonus disk which contains the hands-down worst DT track ever released, This is Your Life. The fact that DT has run out of ideas on this record is proven by the incessant need to rehash material from the Deconstruction album, which wasn't particularly great either but much better than 80% of the material here. A lot of stuff is also rehashed from Sky Blue/Dark Matters. How the hell can you transgress from a SYL/Deconstruction track such as Hear Me to a Disney/Broadway track like Why? Only DT knows. I rest my case.

Empath is an album that has a lot of great moments but in the end is just too busy and unfocused even for the prog/avant spectrum of metal. It seems like every time Devin comes up with a great riff or hook it will change within seconds without much rhyme or reason or transition to a new riff. Obviously this album is experimental and quite the adventure but at times it is just too jumbled. Devin deserves credit for the warm and uplifting atmosphere. The variety of the vocals is fantastic. The breadth of instruments and sounds is staggering. There is a great balance between the symphonic, lighthearted episodes and Devin's throwback to near Strapping Young Lad heaviness. This album has it all, it could just be sewn together with more care and probably be about 10-15 minutes shorter. Rather than a fluid concept, Empath at times just feels like a greatest hits of musical styles Devin effectively creating mashed together.
