When Pinegrove fully flesh out their brand of indie alt-country midwest emo rock thing (oh waw they're American?????), this is poignant like on the opener or the title track. Shame the record is also comprised of many one-minute songs that are not given time to expand on their proposition.

I manage a venue where bands like Pinegrove play - they used to play "the small stage" before hitting indie rock stardom at some point in the last couple of years and certainly before the accusations came into play. I'll be honest, going in, I didn't WANT to like this band. I'd equated them with some new wave of emo that high school girls just couldn't get enough of, and I wanted not a lot to do with that. rI was mistaken on Pinegrove. They are an amazing pop band with a level of talent that is unusual right now, in that the songs leave a lot of emotion and vulnerability out in the open and are still somehow perfectly self-assured and confident. I wouldn't call them an emo band or a country band...to me they are a pop band with indie production and a ridiculous, unrealistic southern drawl that is weirdly endearing.rMy favorite songs are : Paterson and Leo, Easy Enough

I loved the songs of Cardinal, their previous record, but never the sound. Hearing live takes, including the Audiotree Session, of this band are what made me fall in love with them. I feel that this album better captures the sound and energy of Pinegrove as a band, which exudes a sense of warmth. Skylight also shows more consistently polished lyricism from Evan and more poignant moments that rival the best from Cardinal. Favorite tracks: Skylight, Rings, Intrepid, Lights On.

This grew on me super hard. Does a lot of things better than Cardinal. The warm and slightly nostalgic vibe, utilizing Nandi more effectively, Evans vocal percormance, and overall a more dynamic sounding band. Darkness is probably my favorite PG song, especially the second half.
