4.0 excellent | Trey STAFF | January 23rd 20 | Before Evangelion I wasn’t really a big fan of Behemoth. They always had some cool music, but there was nothing to keep me coming back. Evangelion finally changed that as it started to diversify the band’s sound, and The Satanist was even better as it added even more dynamics and memorable moments. It’s I Loved You at Your Darkest that finally grabbed my total attention, though. This is the album that not only added acoustic guitars, varied tempos, clean singing, as well as a ton of melody, but it also used those elements well. Unlike previous releases, each song is easily identifiable and each has its own hook that makes it easy to make it through the entire release. I really hope they keep this up on the next release, too.

3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | November 30th 18 | I Loved You at Your Darkest is a natural follow up and progression from The Satanist and Behemoth have become more approachable than ever without sacrificing anything from their sound or image. Orchestral/symphonic elements are dialed back with Behemoth seeming to prefer choirs, whether they are children's or adults', as their new stylistic tool here. In all cases the choirs work well and ironically they might remind some people of going to church with the creepy atmosphere they dredge up when combined with the blackened death metal base music. The record is aggressive and dark but the major downside is a lot of songs follow a similar songwriting approach and it feels like there is filler along the way. It feels like one of those albums where there are two great segments (tracks 2-5, 9-11 here) and some of the in between is less memorable. Also, it is much more of a track to track based listen and this doesn't allow the atmosphere to become as strong as on The Satanist. It was never going to be possible to follow up the, worthy, hype of The Satanist but Behemoth have still done very well taking their music to the next natural place while keeping all of their values in tact. Nergal and Inferno with the most notable performances. Highlights are Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica, Bartzabel, God=Dog.

4.0 excellent | Brandon Scott EMERITUS | October 5th 18 | I Loved You At Your Darkness sees Behemoth stripping their sound down to the bare essentials, creating their most atmospheric and melodic effort to date, as well as their most "black metal" album in 20 years. There is definitely something compelling about the more streamlined sound, but at times it feels TOO bare and some of the ideas are certainly ones anyone who has been listening to black metal for more than a day have heard before. That being said, this is still a very enjoyable record and I can see it growing with repeated listens. These back-to-basics records can usually go either way, but this one definitely falls in favor of Behemoth.

3.5 great | GamamJ | July 6th 20 | A fascinating move from Nergal, even if not actually that surprising. Moving towards an even more atmospheric and contrasting sound, the atmospheric calm passages present on the Satanist are even more prevalent, and even include som clean vocals and child choirs! A great album, and a really interesting rejuvenation from Behemoth over their last few albums.

3.5 great | TheManMachine | December 10th 18 | Not sure I could name a name broadcasting Satanism more earnestly and large-scale than Behemoth chieftain Nergal. His growls perpetually powerful and snarls always spiteful, metal that's severe and colossal but suitable for stadiums or symphonies -- a commixture of carnage and speed and class that's acute enough to make you consider conversion. Seemingly resting on their laurels a bit here tho, laudable laurels they may be; perhaps guilty simply of not possessing the insistent impact of its predecessor. But hey, they've even got the kids-n-choirs involved. And what aspiring atheist hasn't gotten a kick outta replacing prayer's 'heaven's with 'hell's? Now they just get to hear it roared atop some sincere+epic fury.

3.5 great | resident sputbirb with fancy hat | November 20th 18 | this album feels like the little dilligent brother to the satanist, not quite reaching its hights and polish but its pretty damn close, also doing some things different than the bigger sibling.

4.0 excellent | Chino smoking it up! | October 8th 18 | Well this dudes new aesthetic, as long with the fuckin cool solos and overall instrumentation
manage to surpass some simplicity and predictability in their songwriting. Really cool release and
easy 4 makes me realize how special The Satanist is and considering the bump. The only step back
is that I miss the heavy guitar distortion on this one. Favorite tracks: Ecclesia Diabolica
Catholica; Bartzabel; Sabbath Mater; We Are the Next 1000 Years

4.5 superb | bobcarl2 | October 5th 18 | Behemoth yet again build off the steam built with The Satanist and deliver another atmospheric and insanely heavy album. Well worth the 4-year wait, and absolutely incredible how good this band continues to be.

4.0 excellent | Fernando Alves STAFF | October 5th 18 | It would be unfair and incorrect to label this album as The Satanist Part ll, but it's noticeable that Nergal has found a comfort zone that he will probably continue to explore in the years to come. I Loved You at Your Darkest may reflect some creative stagnation and weariness, but it's still an interesting work that will allow the Polish blasphemers to remain on the extreme metal pole position.

but too many fillers and gimmicks to be interesting from start to finish.
