2008 has been a great year for music. I will dwell deeper into that category in a few days, but I have one thing to talk about: the album of the year. It took almost the full year for me to find the best album, and it comes to us from the Land of the Rising Sun. Don't even ask me about the cover or the lyrics. I have no clue what they mean. All that I know is that these guys incorporate an extraordinary blend of opera, post-rock, metal, and
a pinch of hardcore.Mutyumu has reached the pinnacle of musical perfection; don't even get me started on the pianist. Vocalist Hatis Noit shines as well. Her operatic styling fits perfectly for the
orchestrations that are being presented. The best song of the year (and one that is quickly climbing my best of all time list) Prayeris 11 minutes of splendid musicianship and vocal prowess. At around the 6 minute mark, we are treated with an explosion of piano and orchestral carnage. The best part is that this last the remaining four minutes of the song. Very post-rock climax like in delivery. Overall, this is a gem of 2008, and it comes to me from a very unlikly place. Everything is thrown in your face at once, so this may seem like too much for some, but thank you Mutyumu for showing me that, at your best, you can hang with the best
orchestral band in the world (imo) in Nightwish.
