The trivial aspect everybody notices is the lacking production, especially when compared to
the heavy-as-the-ultimate-fuck-yet-clean-enough work Scott Burns did with their mighty
debut, Effigy of the Forgotten. Personally it isn't that bad at all, everything can
be heard pretty nicely, save for the bass drums at times. Mostly the sound is just different
and unfinished.
When you get over the "bad" production, the music on here, oh yes, is nothing but the same
old Suffocation we all love. This is absolutely NOT your lacking, uninspired successor for a
mighty debut album. No, no no no.
I can say that apart from the production this is definitely on par with the debut, if not
even slightly better.
What you shall do, is to get rid of prejudices, the production is not that bad at all. And
get this now. If you dig all-around great, very tight, vicious old-school death metal, you
will dig this. If you still don't you might just be a plain fool.

Squarely on team "shut up about the production" with this record. If you're a seasoned metalhead, it shouldn't catch your attention nearly as much as the fact that the songwriting is unbelievably good. More complex than Effigy while flowing (imo) a bit more smoothly than Pierced.

Great music, but shitty production. Guitars are like a paper, some (really good) riffs are utterly indecipherable. Drums have a nice reverb, but are too overdiven. Vocals are way too loud. Only the bass sounds nice, loud and is played ferociously, what a performance by Chris Richards! Still, with all the problems, the songs hold up surprisingly well. If you don't mind getting through all that demo production, some best Suffo moments are here, such as insane outro riff from 'Ornaments of Decrepancy' or the first two tracks.

Fuck the people who've rated this 3.5 on the grounds of some idea that they're too good for raw production, this album slays worse than Michael Myers on a night out. The riffs are relentless, perhaps even better crafted than the predecessor, the vocals are aggressive beyond the point of no return, and the bangbangbang drumming is almost too impressive. Monkeys in the Nevada desert dig this.

Wait a minute, I thought this was supposed to be worse than Effigy Of The Forgotten? One of the things often criticized about Breeding The Spawn is its production. And while it does lack Effigy's underwater guitar tones and smothering, claustrophobic atmosphere, I'd be hard pressed to call Breeding's production job "bad" or "amateur". Because aside from a few shoddy parts that probably only take thirty seconds out of the total runtime, Breeding's production is pretty good, though not as good as Effigy's, whose personality was lost on Breeding The Spawn. What does Suffocation do to make up for this lost personality? The only thing they can do: improve their songwriting. And that they do, implementing the malicious riffs, devouring slams, a dynamic-adding bass, the relentless workhorse drumming, and of course the vocal monster that is Frank Mullen. The songwriting is more efficient also, and clearly more is going on during these tracks than ever before, with all parts working towards the singular and ultimate goal of brutal tech-death metal annihilation. So, both Effigy and Breeding have the same endgame, but the difference is in how they got there. All this said, Breeding The Spawn is another masterpiece of brutal technical death metal from Suffocation.
