Candlebox formed in Seattle in 1990, so they originated from the same location as the big grunge bands just at the point when the scene was starting to pick up steam. Their self-titled debut album rides a fine line between hard rock from the late 80s and alternative rock of the 90s, despite the album found in many grunge/post-grunge lists. This is a coherent album with a handful of great tracks, some of them even considered amongst 90s greatest ones. Kevin Martin's high pitched vocals suit Peter Klett's guitar melodies nicely and both support Scott Mercado's powerful drumming, creating some great hooks in the process. An interesting fact is that the track 'Far Behind' that was written about late Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood. I believe that the band's trajectory could have been different if they were signed Sub Pop instead of Madonna's record label Maverick. Recommendations: "Change", "Far Behind", "You", "Rain", "Cover Me".

As stated before, THIS is some definitive 90s music. Although the grunge outfit has been done better by other acts of the decade, this band manages to craft a "replicate" album w/ portions of Blind Melon and 4 Non Blondes.
