| 4.5 superb | BenCee | September 27th 18 | Yet another incredible album from the heroes of death metal. Everything has been taken up several notches. The riffs are more menacing and progressive, the leads and solos are more gorgeous and technical than ever, and there are plenty of surprises to be had. The incorporation of more clean and spoken vocals works perfectly in some parts(the ending of Golgothan Tongues), others not so much. Overall, a fantastic addition to the band's discography.

| 4.0 excellent | Erwann S. EMERITUS | September 5th 23 | Idol is almost on par with Anareta in that the production is bonkers good, the performances are all-around great, and the band nails their prog death metal shtick without stepping too far into either genre (which they did on their latest output).

| 3.0 good | ExoskeletalJunction | April 7th 22 | 5th April: Horrendous - Idol (progressive death metal, 2018)
I don’t really like death metal much, honestly. So the fact that I kind of sort of maybe
enjoy this is probably an achievement in itself. This new wave of death metal actually has
some interest to me because of its consistent prog influence, more accessible production and
less reliance on repetitive chug-offs. I can definitely tell why this is considered great for
its genre, and there are even some Opethian bursts of melody that break the heavy monotone.
But at the end of the day, it’s death metal, with the same riffs, vocals and themes that do
absolutely nothing for me on an emotional level. Maybe someday I’ll understand.

| 4.0 excellent | kheman1317 | January 3rd 19 | The musicianship in this album is absolutely mind blowing and over the top. I would have rated it higher if not for the vocals which sound like a squealing pig at times (It is just a personal preference that I didn't actually love the vocals). There are tracks that I loved including The Idolater, Devotion and Obolus.

| 4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | December 31st 18 | A huge breath of fresh air in the realm of progressive and technical death metal. This album just feels like it is constantly moving as on the whole the music is very groove based and all about the rhythm. Horrendous simply have no time for wankery and robotics and Idol proves to be the exact opposite as it bleeds soul and emotion at every turn. Plentiful headbanging grooves lead into blissful solos all accompanied by very throaty and grimy vocals. At the heart of it the record doesn't feel all that complex but further listening reveals just how good Horrendous are at harmonizing and layering tracks. It feels like you can discover a new lick or subtlety with every listen and the clean production does wonders to allow this. Last but not least is the drumming and bass. Jamie Knox takes a much cleaner jazzy approach on the drums compared to the genre standard and his style fits so well giving the record so much soul instead. No robotic drum triggers at 1000bpm here, thank god. The very pronounced and groovy Alex Kulick bass is also integral to the mix and should be given attention. Such fresh air.

| 4.5 superb | Chino smoking it up! | October 23rd 18 | Though everything is a bit low (to get all things you need to pump up the vol quite a bit) is rreally nice how this band can be from really abusive DM to really prog and melodic (even in some rawesome back-vocals) all at once. The fret-less bass (audible af!) is just everywhere and perfect, rvicious and addictive guitar riffs. Everything on this is really good but, aesthetically speaking, rthe vocals are really setting them apart! Whether melodic or that desperate raw mid-tone scream. rSuch a cool release this one. Faves: Soothsayer, Devotion (Blood for Ink), Obulus.

| 4.0 excellent | Arokan | October 13th 18 | I thought it's gonna be another of those classic death metal worshiping albums but it turned out to be much more interesting. It definetely takes a lot from aforementioned genere but it changes and twists it in a very unique way. With a bit of prog death and even some black metal it creates a very unique album that just keeps you on the edge of the seat for entire runtime. Vocals on here are amazing mixing a classic approach (so kinda very screamy growl?) with occasional screams that instantly bring Burzum to my mind. We got occasional cleans but rthey don't break the flow of the record and actually really enchance the few song they are on. Musicanship is on an high level with simply incredible bass work, that resembles bands like Atheist, that adds so much that I can't imagine this record with different bassist. One of my favourites of this year so far.
