This album is AWESOME. It is the most melodic music Norma Jean has written yet and offers a much more complete sound than their previous work.

Taking a departure from the metalcore-played-straight route they took on Redeemer, Norma Jean opts for a melodic hardcore approach with small hints of post-metal interweaved throughout the tracklist. This might not be readily apparent on opener "Vipers, Snakes, And Actors", but once "Self Employed Chemist" comes bursting through the speakers in a bevy of melodic chords and riffs overlapped by half-shouting-half-singing vocals, the change is very noticeable. This is probably Norma Jean at their simplest, and you know? They put together their best effort at the time (sans O God, of course), so it obviously did them some good. It's nothing that reinvents the wheel, but this is some solid and occasionally fantastic melodic hardcore from a band that would only get better as the years went on, building off of this release in particular.

Norma Jean just can't decide what they want to do on The Anti-Mother. Do they wanna be a metalcore dissonance band or a more rock oriented group with "clean" vocals? Here they try for both with underwhelming results.

What happened???
There is no easy way of saying this, but this is possibly the biggest let down album I have heard in a while... It hurts to say that, it really does.
The Anti Mother, is a perfect example of an album that would have been perfect, if Norma Jean hadn't written it (some would argue that Redeemer had the same problem). There are some average, and some very good tracks on this album, but I would have loved to have heard more Norma Jean on the album. Obviously, with a new vocalist comes change, progression even... but I like to think that with progression would come an album that the old fans would be blown away by.
Perhaps the change from Redeemer to The Anti Mother was so radical, that I am just struggling to grasp the new sound, but when compared to the levels of technicality and structural genius of O' God, none of Norma Jean's latest releases have met the mark.
It is impossible for an avid Norma Jean listener to appreciate this album, and it is that which has lead me to believe that what made Norma Jean work was Scogan. Since the departure of Scogan, there has never again been the sweet hacking up of guitars and vocals, that is expected from the style of Hardcore that Norma Jean have produced in former releases... I shudder to think what lies in wait, as this is obviously not Norma Jean's end, but more of a "re-birth". I may have to bump the title "Norma Jean" from my list of favorites...

This is a very raw, and fresh new sound for norma jean. A lot of the chaotic mess that they were rockin before has been replaced by better crafted riffs which I liked. I also liked the change-up in vocals, twas pretty creative. Drumming was also a standout for me, a lot of good stuff without whirling double bass.

This album is also known as Norma Jean vs. The Anti Mother. I haven?t heard much of Norma Jean?s other music so I cannot compare it to previous albums. Although, what I can compare it to is of what I expect from a band like them. I recently listened to this CD and I was not disappointed. It is quite a good album. I?ve come to the conclusion that parts of it are metalcore whilst the rest is post-hardcore. Norma Jean are the next popular Christian metal band and they are good at what they do. They cant surpass underOATH (I don?t think any Christian metal band can) but that doesn?t matter as this is still an excellent release.

Norma Jean's best effort thus far. It opens hard and closes twice as hard. They promised that they wouldn't make the same album twice and this is no exception this isn't redeemer 2. It may be more melodic than previous efforts but they are still furious and aggressive. Norma Jean is only getting better.
