What a cool way to start a discog, even moreso in 1982. The darkwave side is strong here. The songs are edgy, hypnotic, mysterious, and, well, dark. This is clear from the start with the ritualistic opener. The bass can be insanely catchy, see 2, or the titular 7, both excellent tracks. 7 comes at a good time because the steam was slightly getting lost just before it. Not a first Cocteau entry I expected, but one I both like and respect. 3.75

This is what The Cure's "Pornography" would sound like if it was palatable to me. Unfortunately, Pornography has a lot more depth.

Though Cocteau Twins would come to be one of the most revered bands dream pop ever saw, and for good reason, their debut was a pretty lukewarm affair. It definitely has its moments, like the perfectly paranoid title-track and the undeniably catchy "But I'm Not". Liz Fraser starts her career eccentrically, as expected, and Will Heggie's basslines are decent enough, but elsewhere this is pretty much your standard gothic-tinged post-punk album. It's pretty one-note atmospherically, and while this is typically fine, it's a vice here due to the sheer lethargy on display musically. It's sometimes a chore to listen to. They definitely have a dreamy aesthetic to work with, and that would be expanded upon greatly at a later time, but little of the dynamics to make it interesting. It's a start for Cocteau Twins, but aside from a few tracks, Garlands struggles to find it's true identity.
