The first disc is an occasionally enjoyable and eclectic collection of tracks, and while not as consistently engaging (or arguably not even as focused) as her previous experimental stuff on albums like Pele, it still has strong moments and some rather magnificent soundscapes. The second disc is an overtly long assortment of live tracks which add very little to the album as a whole despite being almost two-thirds of the running time.

To Venus and Back's problem is that it pales so much in comparison to her previous work that its share of brilliant songs can be overwhelmed by overambitious tracks, making this more of a release for her dedicated fanbase rather a wider audience.
