What a dark emotional rollercoaster Anathema’s A Natural Disaster is. From the bleak cover art, to the execution of the instruments and vocal harmonies, and to the lyrics this album is beautiful in every possible sense of the word. My personal favorite songs from this amazing album are Closer, Electricity, Are You There and the title track A Natural Disaster. Once you push play on your CD player one listen just won’t be enough as Anathema tug at your heart strings and beckon you to take another ride.

There are a host of good tracks ("Closer," "Are You There?", "Pulled Under...", the title track) but as a whole, the album lacks the unity and energy that made Judgement so effective. That isn't to say it's bad-- it's wonderfully atmospheric, and if pressed, I would call this Anathema's second best record-- but it isn't quite at the level of Judgement.

Another fan-favourite, and for a reason. From the Radiohead-esque introduction, through the magnificent titletrack, this is Anathema at its finest. And gloomiest.

Although not quite as stunning as Judgement (but pretty damn close), A Natural Disaster is still, from top to bottom, a flawless piece of work. At the time, it was the band's softest sounding record, but what we have here is a collection of beautifully crafted songs, more reliant on keyboards and ambience than guitars, which trust me, isn't a bad thing. It works ever so well. Definitely an album that, along with Judgement, is ideal for being the first piece of music you own from this brilliant band. Depends on where your music taste lies.

a marked and huge improvement over the last album, this album creates a very unique atmosphere and sound and best of all is far more varied than the mid-era atmospheric rock albums from anathema (judgement etc.). the album lacks the immediacy and pure hard-hitting tones of those albums as a slight drawback, but this really was a breakthrough considering the last album really didn't deliver. the experimentation on this album is a lot more refined and works a lot better than their previous experimentations on albums like alternative 4 and feels far more like a cohesive unit than all their other atmospheric rock releases. highly recommended. :]

A Natural Disaster is a beautiful album that has an incredible flow. The order of the songs feels incredibly natural and there's a good amount of variety. This CD shows the softer side of Anathema which is an extremely touching side of them. The songs are very atmospheric with some flashes of bands like Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree. There is much more focus on piano/keyboards in many of the songs and it gives this album a very laid back feel. Pulled Under... stands out as it has a lot of energy in comparison to most of the other songs. The weakest song on here is the last track, Violence, though it's not a bad song by any means.

These guys being compared to My Dying Bride is a travesty. Just because you come from the same area and era doesn't mean you sound alike. Whereas My Dying Bride created emotional, fierce, and crushing music, Anathema kind of dabbled around with formulaic doom that n00bs to the genre think is good. They're blind as fucking moles. Blind moles.
