Daron Malakian's vocal and lyrical abilities were basically chewed out since Mezmerize. Mankind considers him not to be a versatile guitar player and composer, though they tend to find his skills within both areas as superior to the former. Daron assembled a side project known as Scars on Broadway, which included fellow System of a Down bandmate John Dolmayan. This outfit's eponymous debut record results in people at a loss for words, though I'd say it's something not unexpected. Whilst the songwriting is indeed basic and dumbed down in stark contrast to what SOAD has been typically known for, Scars on Broadway's rock-driven approach isn't necessarily going to end up bad during the last hour. Instrumentally speaking, this band stays consistent and direct the moment Daron comes up with these feeble-minded tracks, and the frontman himself doesn't really sound as off-putting as he did when he provided additional vocals for that double album; then again, this is a sign of marginal improvement on the dude's part.

I think the first two tracks on this album perfectly sum the rest up; “Serious” and “Funny”. The best comparison for Scars on Broadway is System of a Down, which figures seeing as 2/5ths of the bands make up come straight from System. That’s not to say they are identical, the liberal politics and good humour have come across intact, but the tone is bouncier and poppier. There is also a greater range of instrumentation, the sounds jumps from thrash to ballad to electro. Daron Malakian (The guy who screams “WAKE UP IT’S PARTY TIME!” on B.Y.O.B, y’know the one i mean) does a fantastic job fronting the band with impressive soaring vocals and is an ample fit for Serj Tankians position.
In party mode Scars rock seriously hard, “They Say” is infectious and catchy while “Chemicals” is a foul mouthed techno marvel that trumps anything SOAD have so far done. On the other hand of the spectrum “3005” is a thoughtful ballad revelling in how the right will finally die out, but still manages to be humouress and happy.
If you like SOAD you’ll find a lot to love with Scars, if you don’t know either than Scars is a brilliant entry to the mad pair and is well worth checking out.

A decent album, not very versatile, it seems like daron only knows how to write 2 or 3 different songs, he just writes them 15 different ways. Not as good as Serj's solo effort, but a decent album. Chemicals, Stoner Hate, and Serious are pretty cool, everything else is fairly bland

While I would take Serj's solo album over this anyday, I would really like to see a reunion soon. This is okay, sounds more like SOAD than Serj's work but not even nearly as good.

It's not the most complicated or pretentious album in recent memory, but it attacks in a simple manner. The songs are very simple in structure, relying primarily on hooks, but this allows for listeners to immediately grasp and remember the song. Much like the Beatles, this album can be sung along to in about 2 listens, which is its greatest strength. It's a FUN listen. It's essentially metal and punk infused pop-rock, but experimental moments do come into play. This is especially interesting because the electronic bits and bites add freshness to what could have been an average stale rock album. The contrast created by this is what makes tracks like "Chemicals," "3005," and "Cute Machines," the most blatantly experimental tracks, so intriguing. This album plays like SOAD took a few hints from Bruce Springsteen and the Beatles. Not any less powerful by any means, but just more accessible.

I'm very disappointed with this album.
Darrons work with soad was killer but the playing, the guitar tone, the song writing, the whole album is a mess writhe with weak songs and poor production.

So far I've listened to it about 2 times through and skipped through other songs and here is what I got.
Good:
-Stoner Hate is an awesomely catchy song while still being able to maintain a metal edge to it.
-Alot of people hate it but I like Daron's voice and he has really strong harmonies.
-I like the synth stuff they threw in there too, especially on Exploading/Reloading.
Bad:
-Lyrics boarder from decent to absolutely inane.
-Too many power chords, not enough riffs.
-Daron (just like Serj) is better off with SOAD than on his own.
-Stupid Song titles
-Whoring Streets
