Amorphis' sophomore effort is easily one of the best metal albums of the '90s. Tomi's clean vocals sound stressed and out of place, but not detracting from the album. The album never seems to get old. The more you listen, the more you like it!

It might not be the best album by these guys or the greatest metal record and the diversity of rinfluences can occasionally sound disjointed and out of place, but goddamn if the album isn't fun rto listen to. Amorphis here play a mesh of 70s prog rock, death/doom, classic nwobhm and hard rrock with elements of finnish folk that manages to stay fresh and enjoyable no matter how much I rreplay it despite its flaws.

Maybe the album's production is a bit flat, but the quality under the gorgeous cover is beyond fantastic. A captivatingly atmospheric melo-death album, which also riffs incredibly hard. You won't forget this album. Also there is nothing wrong with the clean vocals, focus on the vibe instead!

If you ever saw Finnish winter before the climate change, this record captures that vision perfectly. Death metal without death metal lyrics. And even keyboards and hummable riffs! Blue album cover art will fly you into other time and alternate world.

Musicwise it is really great, but the production makes it not that easy to listen, at least in my opinion. Who feels the same should try their 2010 Magic and Mayhem, which contains rerecorded versions of older songs.
