Landing somehwere between (and closer to) the southern-tinged metal/mathcore of Every Time I Die and the groovier melodic moments of the emo/post-hardcore of Envy on the Coast, Greyhaven manage to simultaneously integrate the sound of a thousand existing bands while failing to carve an identity of their own. I'm more than happy to accept that I may be in the minority in this case, because this convergence of sound may feel groundbreaking to younger listeners, but the blend of genres that Greyhaven have assembled here does little more to set themselves apart from peers of days past and present than it does in presenting a jumbled cacophony of recycled ideas.

Are Greyhaven a derivative modern metalcore band? Yes, they are. Don't they rip, tho? Yes, they do! With dynamic song structures, dem beaut tones, great clean and growling vocals, and a knack for big dumb choruses, they sure fill the spot ETID left some time ago.

"Empty Black" works all the progressivity imposed in both Rock and Metal. In addition to the lightness in the compositions, some tracks have their weight and value. Knowing the sound of Greyhaven only now, i can't say too much about the historical context and the evolution of the band. But i can faithfully say that this record is one of the best of the year so far.
