Despite bearing lush instrumentals and sensual vocal performance, Isolation does sound a tad too lackluster. Uchis' performance is great, but she does lack the swagger to elevate these songs from "nice" to "ow yeah now that's a banger". The same can be said about the productions - which are chill and luscious - that ultimately convey more aesthetic than songwriting. It just does not stick as much as other modern soul/R&B records.

Stylistic litheness here is laudable -- kind of a hodgepodge, tho a pretty winsome hodgepodge. Swanky sunny-island funk, dancy without dumb-downs, dreamy vibes-n-melodies, Colombian flava, classy balladry aboard an airplane. Tunes slickly straddle the line between radio-ready pop and richly+reliably arranged, a gaggle of guest-spots range from Tyler the Creator to the dude from Blur; wish there was more in the way of remarkable personality coming from Kali however. For my money, best in show is the simplest: "In My Dreams", in which her fancied utopia is both childlike and commendable ("I'm never stressing my bills, nobody ever gets killed / It's the dream world").

85/100. An excellent pop/neo sou/r&r album from Columbian American singer Kali Uchis. I LOVE the production here, as well as the catchy hooks and melodies. In addition to this, the features were all very strong and added to each track they appeared on. Popstars, pay attention. This is the new standard.
