Frozen marks the band's full transition from melodic death metal to a more polished, dark and sorrowful kind of gothic metal, highlighted by Miika Tenkula's intense guitar work and Ville Laihiala's emotional vocal delivery. The latter becomes a full member and contributes also in the writing process. With its atmospheric hooks and introspective lyrical themes of misery, heartbreak, and death, Frozen becomes the starting point of my personal affection for Sentenced. I understand this only has a few ratings, but wow is it ever overrated. Admittedly I've known about Sentenced for some time, but only decided to give getting into them another shot after the recent passing of their guitarist. I will say that I enjoyed the guitar work on this album, both rhythm and lead. The rest of this disc, however, I found to be an incredible disappointment. At times it felt like I was listening to a slightly harder version of H.I.M., and no doom/melodic death elements could be found. There is something to this record, but unfortunately it falls short of meeting any decent expectations...the vocals here do a great dealing in ruining the rest of the record.
