The album whose name was the biggest pain in the ass to type this year also turned out to be one of the biggest surprises. Sigur Ros drop the funeral marches and pick up the acoustic guitars on this unexpected turn from a band trying to remain relevant in what's considered by many an irrelevant genre. 'Gobbledigook' announces the change triumphantly with pounding drums, hand claps and lalalas that more closely resemble Animal Collective, than say, Explosions in the Sky. The change works wonderfully for a few tracks, before Sigur Ros prove they're still among the best at what they do: epic post rock. 'Festival' and 'Ara Batur' are two of their best tracks in a long time, the latter decked out with a gloriously over-the-top orchestra and choir. It'll be interesting to see where Sigur Ros go from here. This album leaves their avenues completely open.

Sigur Ros trade in their cold winter sound for a more celebratory, cool breeze. me𠳵𠭠eyrum vi𠳰ilum endalaust's sound shouldn't come as much of a surprise because this sound was hinted at in their previous release Takk but it is a big step away from they're Post Rock roots. The singles, Gobbledigook and Vi?ilum endalaust, are very catchy and up beat tunes but trick you into thinking that Sigur Ros have become just a better version of Animal Collective which is completely false.
Although this is a very festive album the pace is a lot more chilled and personal. G? daginn may be one of the most 'human' tracks that Sigur Ros have ever written consisting of just brushes, an acoustic guitar, some background strings and J? Birgisson's classic falsetto voice. The two main highlights are "Festival" and "Ara Batur" featuring two of the best climaxes of the year, while Festival begins as a slow ambient tune with a quick triumphant build up at the 4:40 mark while Ara Batur (which was recorded live) is a beautiful piano ballad which flows beautifully into a choir which leads into a full orchestra, creating one of the best songs of the year and Sigur Ros's career.
All and all Sigur Ros has changed sound in a more traditional simplistic fashion while keeping their trademarked beauty intact. Call it whatever you like but me𠳵𠭠eyrum vi𠳰ilum endalaust is another surperb stepping stone for arguably the most beautiful band of our generation.

Although Med Sud is a step down from previous records (and really, four masterpieces in a row would be tough for any band to pull off) I'd wager that it's the band's most free sounding and fun release to this point. But since the hilarious cover already gave it away I guess that's not too surprising!

To me this is Sigur Ros at the uttermost pinnacle. While ( ) is considered by some the best album, the variation and hooks of me? su? ? eyrum vi? spilum endalaust make it much more outstanding and different to anything the band has done previously. From the soothing falsetto voice to the magical orchestral arrangements, Sigur Ros have produced one of those albums that are just mesmerizing,unforgettable and will stick with you forever.

The Icelandic title of this album translates into English as "With a renewed buzz in our ears, we play endlessy" (close enough). Originally, this title put me off of the album. What I had always like about Sigur Ros ( ( ), Agaetis Bryjun, etc.) was their relaxed, laid back sound. So the idea of a "playfull" album did not appeal to me at all. However, upon giving this album several listens, I warmed up to the less laid-back sound of Sigur Ros. Surely not as good as previous endeavours, this album still delivers. While the tracks are shorter, the same tried and tested methods of Sigur Ros show themselves and ultimately make this an excellent album. The third track in particular (I won't attempt to spell it) is a great mix of the new and old Sigur Ros. This is a highly soothing and enjoyable listen. It seems to be more accessable than previous Sigur Ros efforts, which is both a positive and a negative. I see this album as somewhat of a new direction for the Icelandic post-rock idols, but overall, it's well done. I'll be interested to hear the studio follow-up.

Quite possibly the most surprising release of 2008, having followed the almost uninspired 4th studio album by Icelandic Post-Rock legends Sigur R?I did not think that this would show anything more than a continued downward trend. In fact I played the opening song Gobbledigook once, and immediately turned it off thinking that it was nothing more than crap. Then after my visit to UT in early November, I was asked why I don?t listen to happy music by two of the women I went to see there. I was quite simply put, offended. A day later from returning from the trip, I put this album back on and was completely and utterly floored by it.
With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly is quite simply put, a more powerfully hopeful record than anything I?ve ever heard before. From the playfulness of Inn??Syngur Vitleysingur, the unforeseen epic nature of Festival and ra B?r, to the lamenting hope of All Alright, Jonsi Birgisson creates the perfect environment for a reflective and joyous beauty. That even in the darkest and most subtle times, we can smile and listen to our music.
