Tha Carter 3 is an exemplary example of today's Lil Wayne - half syrupy MC with awesome punchlines/half musical idiot. Just as 3Peat and A Milli are examples of killer lyrics, listening to Lollipop and Mrs. Officer is music's equivalent of eating a pinecone whole. As an album, this is a roller coaster ride of hip-hop atrocities and anthems. It needs dissection to find the quality, and to remove the malignant tumor that is the terrible songs.

An overblown, bloated, scattered collection of egoism that had just as many misfires as it had genuine hits. 2008 was without doubt the year of Weezy, but there is such a thing as too much Weezy; the over-saturation of Lil Wayne on the airwaves led to Tha Carter III as not having much more than that which you haven’t already heard. It was ambitious and defiantly creative, but not the modern rap masterpiece many critics made it out to be.

Easily one of the most overrated albums ever. Lollipop is annoying with that auto tune bs. A Milli repeats itself, Got Money is about money like every damn rap song, and Mrs. Officer? WTH? Phone Home is lame as well. In fact, every song here is lame. Don't buy.

Alright...
this is the best thing Lil' Wayne has come out with, and it's not going on my Worst Of 2008 list. But, it damn sure isn't going on my Best Of 2008 either. Actually, I it's such an AVERAGE album (slightly on the bad side) that I'd say it should be one of the quickest albums to fall into obscurity. But... it... won't.
"How can you hate on him?! He freestyles every song!" And it shows when his flow gets chopped up and his lyrics cease to make sense. He needs to figure out how to formulate a running metaphor... actually, let's do this one step at a time. He needs to learn how to make a metaphor. I wonder how many one-line similes he used in the album. If anyone figures that out, you've wasted your time, because I don't actually care... and neither should you.
Oh, and "Lollipop"... *sigh*... ****ing g**d*** "Lollipop". I heard so many people praise this song because of the dice-shaped lollipops in the video. Yeah, you read that. I think that's all I have to say about the song.
I don't get the hype. It's not like he's original. Check every album in the context in which it was released. Carter III has a song with Akon, and one with T-Pain?! NOOOOO! He uses AUTO-TUNE?! Woooooahhhh! S***, if he was two people, he'd feature himself on a verse, because he likes to co-opt the "now" trends THAT much.
I've got one good point on the album... the Kanye-produced song about him being an alien. That was actually a pretty funny song and a song that ONLY Weezy could have done. So... kudos.

This album is no doubt the most interesting Hip Hop album I've heard in a while. Coming from someone who doesn't really listen to much Hip Hop besides the classics like NWA and Public Enemy and the only contemporary rapper that interests me, Lupe Fiasco, I was suprised that this album caught my attention. This album isn't one focused around a strong single. Rather, it is more of a compilation of excellently produced songs by expert producers (such as Kanye West, David Banner, and Swizz Beatz) that showcase Wayne's excellent creative vision and flow.

It's got the kind of budget that allows him to appear as a doctor, a martian, a political Robin Thicke collaborator, and a cop seducer back-to-back, and then there's also T-Pain and Babyface and "Lollipop". But it's also got ridiculous rhymes (too many good ones to quote an example) over primordial beats, absurd personality aplenty, a blunt-laced political collaboration with himself, and "Pussy Monster". A Jumbled Commercial Package it may be, but the benefits are reaped, and little is done to lull "the best rapper alive" - his words, not mine.
