Y'all sleeping on this album. Fantastic production, great grooves and clever lyrics.
Definitely album of the year contender.

the lyrics are never as clever as pitchfork wants them to be.. they've been writing the same album of artsy cock rock for years now.. solid 3 for years now..

It doesn't really fit with the rest of my musical taste, but I tend to like this band a lot more when they
just do the dry post punk thing as opposed to the more accessible, varied indie stuff. Light up gold-
dry post punk. Sunbathing animal- indie. Human performance- dry post punk. This one- indie.
Looking forward to LP5, I'm sure I'll like it!

Fun alb with lots of sounds and influences mixed into the globally punk aesthetic. In fact I usually prefer when they focus on those influences rather than the punk aspect, but that's not to say that I dislike the punkish tracks. 1 for instance is super catchy and bouncy (thanks bass) despite the vox that I'm not always the biggest fan of. I did warm up to them as time went though, including on 2 where after a Doors-evoking intro I started liking the vox more and more - plus the instrumental side is cool. 3 transitions very well into a cool slower track, then 4 is very surfey with 60s pink floyd-evoking vox, and it;s frankly a highlight for me. The riffage starting of 5 ruptures a bit abruptly imo, but the track is quite fun especially from the midtrack on. 6 is one of the more punkish tracks that I find a bit meh, but 7 is more successful especially with its fun Amen break. 8 is quite interesting as I almost got RnB vibes from it at times which is cool. 9-10 are more conventional but sure are fun stuff. The transition to 11 is a bit poor and it's kind of like 6 although the guitar and bass are good as always. 12 starts off with a darker, more post punk tone which I dig, but it feels like the track didnt fully bake it falls a bit flat. I like how with the spoken dialogue they make it clear that 13 is conclusion track, and it's a very fun and groovy Clashy tune. Bumped this a point, but then it ended on a fadeout why why why, but I'll give the album the benefit of the doubt because I had a massive interruption in the middle so it's not quite fair. 3.8

Upfront, punchy, smart, and fun songs. I definitely found some of the vocals grating on the ears, but in a way that absolutely grows on you. Perhaps then not grating, but forcefully inserting themselves into your brain. Trust me, they're not leaving anytime soon.

Punk and leftism, part II. Parquet Courts and IDLES are two sides of the same coin. If IDLES are loud and angry Brits taking all the abrasive elements of punk to punch you in the ballsack or kick you in the mouth, Parquet Courts represent the hipster and pedantic Brooklynites not agreeing with the dominants of this world and taking all the artsier bits of punk to revolutionize the world by preaching instead of fighting. The record is thus more diverse, though less visceral, than IDLES' as it incorporates more funky basslines, dancy tunes and overall a more posed aesthetic (Danger Mouse's production sure helps). The lyrics, while at times lecturing (as almost all politically-inclined music is), add more interesting commentaries than their Brit counterparts (see Violence or Before The Water Gets Too High). Maybe one day, the smart boys will line up with the tough men and come up with a true change. For the time being, Parquet Courts brings a more nuanced brick to the revolution wall. You sure need muscles to build a wall, but first you need to decide how to build it. And if you can do it while dancing the hell out of it, the better.

It's been a pleasure hearing em progressively evolve and trickily come into their own -- performances and uptightness tightened, versatility and accessibility evinced, sprinklings of emotion+solicitude without withholding their bug-eyed+bewildered shout-talk. But through all the composed funk-punk and classic rock-esque accordance, I still find myself yearning for their more raggedy regimens of yore. More urgent and assured and shrewd and flow-centric than the last one methinks, which is swell, but the loaded lyricism tends to fall a bit flat -- maybe cuz they oft still sound ironic as hell.
