0.0 | VaxXi | April 27th 18 | Only reason Doof doesn't like Dirty Computer is because it reminds him there are women out there having a lot of sex he's not a part of and that makes them "whores"

2.0 poor | JJKeys | April 28th 18 | Musically, it's acceptable but so sorely lacking in variation and identity that you can barely
differentiate tracks, let alone this album from the plethora of modern pop records it's so
desperately trying to sound like. PYNK is the most memorable track here just for being so
instrumentally minimal, though that's not saying I like it.
The concept is so diluted that it's barely noticeable, a feature that made Monae's last records so
compelling - and unlike ArchAndroid or Electric Lady, Dirty Computer lacks the soul, funk and
symphonic elements that made them so distinct, too.
Lyrically, it's pretty abysmal. That's not to dismiss the song's themes and messages, but the
lyrics are reductive or obscene to the point of undermining their gravity. Again, Monae's other
records handle the feminist and pro-black message with a greater weight and poignancy.
It's an okay pop album, but it feels that Janelle Monae has lowered herself to stay relevant in
the modern pop scene - but in 5 years, will people even care about this record anymore?

3.5 great | this space for rent | April 27th 18 | On Dirty Computer high concept has finally given way to what was always the most compelling aspect of Janelle Monae's Cindy Mayweather persona, her underlying humanity. It always felt like Monae was a burgeoning diva for an as-yet unrealized but tenable future. Here she paints her personal roadmap with swathes of funk and soul as she assumes the role she was always meant to play. Herself.

4.0 excellent | gryndstone | April 27th 18 | The Cindi Mayweather theatrics give way to something even more human and relatable than any other of Janelle's works. More than just the soundtrack to an 'emotion picture', Dirty Computer is the story of its artist finding herself during tumultuous times, and laying it *all* out the table - politics, injustice, sexuality - you name it, all to a sweet, sweet groove.

5.0 classic | cjbizzlebizzle | December 31st 18 | An absolute mammoth of a pop album that perfectly bridges the gap between extremely political and extremely approachable, addictive pop. In almost every song Janelle gets her message across while still being able to maintain the catchy, effortless accessibility that well made pop should have. R&B, soul, funk and hip hop vibes bleed into the music at almost every turn and this style separates Janelle from her contemporaries in the pop world, she basically is swagger. The consistency of tracks here is unreal and every single song has a key, memorable moment to draw back to making a full play-through truly magical. On top of that Janelle crushes it in so many different ways. Screwed is the pop anthem exuding sexual innuendo, dismal world views while being insanely catchy with the best hook of the year. Django Jane is one of the best rap sections of the year. Make Me Feels is perhaps the overall best track on the album and basically a perfect pop song. Beyond this Janelle can flat out sing displayed in the slower R&B centric tracks like Don't Judge Me, So Afraid and I Like That. The politics, LGBT and feminist vibes are sure to turn away plenty of people but in the end Janelle puts it all on the line here and musically this is the best pop album of recent times.

4.5 superb | TheManMachine | August 8th 18 | In a superior world Monae would be a pop star with as much attention as, oh let's say, The Chainsmokers. Alas, it's too electric, eclectic; too protestive+provocative for the prudes. In other words: "I'm always left to center and that's right where I belong / I'm the random minor note you hear in major songs". Thing is tho, these songs ARE major: hooky and momentous, confidently pumpin' out sex positivity and female empowerment and compelling modernity, bursting with fun funk and smarts and chuckles. It's incensed but always open for embrace; usually more elaborately than 'we're all screwed so let's all screw' but rocks that route too. Janelle is The American Dream who also happens to be naked in a limousine, inciting pussy riots in peppy packages, singing like a champ while spitting bars harder than most in recent memory. See "Crazy, Classic, Life" for a premium pop/hip-hop combo, "Django Jane" for said hard bars, and "Americans" for finale fireworks and satire for the ages. Prince would be proud.

3.0 good | Britch2tiger | May 2nd 18 | So bummed this wasn't a continuation of the Archandroid (in accordance to this album's Wiki page), maybe by the next album. Will be honest, the best tracks on this album are scarce and scattered on this album... Personally, tracks 5 (Screwed - power symbolism of sex & sects), 8 (Make Me Feel - accepted confusion [?] of sexual fluidity), 11 (Don't Judge Me - love w/ an image), and 14 (Americans - the CONCEPT of an intrinsic good nation) serve as the better tracks for their more elaborative lyrics. However, 14 is pretty "eh" aesthetically when compared to any song from Rage Against the Machine. Tracks 3 (Take a Byte - sexual power is a double-edge), 6 (Django Jane - brag transition to general power dynamics), 7 (PYNK - "pink is 'life' and everywhere"), and 9 (I Got the Juice - sexual restraint) mildly match the same status. Sprinkles of political activism are found all throughout this album, w/ 14 being a real dichotomous choice for most - they'll either love or despise the track. Other than that, a slightly above average album imo.

2.7 average | Erwann S. STAFF | August 31st 22 | Ditching the conceptual, Monae wants to be a bona fide pop star - good for them! However, it comes at the expense of lyrical depth and musical diversity. Also Monae ain't a rapper, but apparently, it wasn't clear when they made the album.

1.5 very poor | Rik VII (sound-off ratings out of 10) | July 22nd 19 | I understand that Monae felt that the political situation demanded a bold massage, an unambiguous statement. Sadly, to achieve that, she dumbs herself down from a lyrical and musical perspective alike. What once was multilayer is now "power is sex!!1!" (huh?). What once was well-crafted art pop is now dull radio music. While I agree with the album's general sentiment, it remains artistically ill-conceived and one of the most needlessly weak releases of the decade. - 3.0

2.5 average | Viscotti | May 23rd 18 | incredibly disappointing. she wanted to stop hiding behind the persona of cindi mayweather
to make a more personal album. but what we got was basically the same things she was doing
in the last two albums but more modernized and watered down to hell.
it's still about a dystopian future, still about being a renegade and being special, someone
is still out to get the MC - so why depart from the original concept in the first place?
musically, it's more of a mixed bag than electric lady, but is significantly less focused
and effective in each individual song's goals. lyrically and musically, it tends to be
awkward and yet straightforward.

3.5 great | Risodo | May 5th 18 | There are certain genres that are difficult for me both in the matter of absorption and to debate, since i feel dumb about it. This is the case of "Dirty Computer", for example. Judging by her voice, Janelle Monae shows that it can be said that this is another great album, presenting herself as visionary and well qualified in what she does. I just feel that this record has not evolved inside me yet the way it should be.
