It's loud and it's definitely not for everyone, but holy shit; this is the sequel to Fetch I thought I'd never get.

The Armed = crazy shit. Their blend of post-hardcore, mathcore, noise rock, cybergrind, and compression is evidently their own, and they show again on Only Love that they've got the songwriting chops to make it more than a maximalist mess. Still, this is the one Armed record whose mixing is at its most undecipherable.

Dissonant and distorted, a vision of punk and hardcore for the future. I admire the Armed for their ability to push the scene forward; the album pushes the envelope and is still a fantastic listen.

Hyper and chaotic yet surprisingly melodic noise rock/hardcore/mathcore/punk from the purposefully mysteriously Detroit musicians. Very few really know who The Armed are but Only Love shows us a band that is pushing the boundaries of hardcore with a very electronic, melodic approach replacing what usually is a traditional guitar driven genre approach with a wall of sound made up of guitars and electronic instruments. While the electronics are extremely refreshing and key to the success of the album, the very noisy production and utter amount of layered sounds can be a hindrance at times obfuscating what is going on just a bit too much. It leads to a lack of things to latch onto during the 37 minutes. As far as the pace of the album, The Armed crush it here with a great flow of fast paced hardcore songs broken up by more long winded slower pieces, plenty of room for exploration of this unique sound.

Painted in a Noisey piece as an assortment of anonymous-ish identity trolls whose weirdness seemed engineered; reliant on hype via a try-hard+enigmatic 'what even is a band, man' eminence -- so perhaps just let the music here speak for itself. Helpful that Ben Koller took over the crew's kit and Kurt Ballou is producer and Convergean consultant and quite possibly covert bandleader. Solidifying their excellence however is standing out from the hardcore/metalcore hive-mind stylistically, careening past copycat status. Synths stab through the chaotic muck, vox got variance, unadulterated vehemence and all-out scuzz make room for melody and noise pop calm-downs. And just when you think you're goin' out on a calm drift towards Jupiter, there ya are blasting off into a black hole.

This is a LOT. I think I need better headphones, because there are a lot of things to enjoy here, but I can barely hear any of them. So many layers to the sound that it almost sounds like pure distortion. Either way, there are parts that I can enjoy, and I can respect a band that can layer this many things on top of each other and still make it sound good!rEDIT: Holy cow did this grow on me!
