This was the album that got me into weird music, basically. I was 14 or something. My dad, a guy who surely loves his music, told me it was great and I wanted to know what the fuss was about. So I borrowed it from him. On the first listen, the live disc just seemed like a bunch of random noises to me, and the studio disc was even worse. So I put it away for some time. But then on a second, particularly bored occasion, I dug the live part up again and it just kinda rang a bell. Right from the first organ bleeps of Astronomy Domine, all the way to the Dave Gilmour's soulful, wordless vocal that ends A Saucerful Of Secrets, I knew this exploratory, improvised, otherworldly alien music was the stuff I wanted to listen to for the rest of my life.
And here I am now, 4 years later, listening to everything from Acid Mothers Temple through John Zorn.

The live album is an absolute masterpiece! I prefer this version of "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" and "A saucerful of secrets" than "A saucerful of secrets" version.
The studio album is in some parts...questionable, but instrumentals such as "Sysyphus", "The narrow way", and "The Grand Vizier's Garden Party" are very good.

A double LP with the first half containing excellently recorded live performances is somewhat tarnished by a hodgepodge eclectic experimental recordings on the back end. And really it is a shame because the fate of Ummagumma as a simple live release would have been favored critically far better. Astronomy Divine, Careful With That Axe Eugene, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun and A Saucerful Of Secrets capture the band in its early post Syd experimental career stage. The live performance is hauntingly beautiful in its macabre psychedelic presentation and at times trance inducing like The Doors. However all is not lost on the much maligned studio effort. The Rogers constructed Grantchester Meadows is interestingly whimsical and somewhat Genesis reminiscent. The personal highlight while combing through the second record here is Gilmour's The Narrow Way - Part 3. The vocal overdubs and instrumentation serve somewhat as a template for the future and far more commercially successful "Pink Floyd Sound" down the road. If this deep cut had been kept secret and released on one of the many career archive box sets available now, it would be heralded as a classic.

I vibe with Disk 1 a good bunch (just makes you want to see them in the 60s yknow), but Disk 2 is just a long protracted series of tracks at various degrees of unnecessaryness. 1-4 are acid jams, although by the midtrack of 4 it starts to feel a bit lengthy. Egyptian-sounding organs and synths, edoteric drums, tasty bass, scarce vocals, yum. 2 when it explodes with crazy screams sounds like delicious prog rock. On disk 2, 1 sounds like a Zelda OST, and 2 sounds like Nils Frahm on its first third and La Monte Young in the rest. Album is crazy good so far (maybe 3.8), but it all goes downhill after that. 3 is the first track I didn't fak with, and 4 sounds like an OST in a bad way. 5 is a pretty Nick Drakey ballad, 7 is super pretty, sadly 6 is a horrible track. The rest is just nice or boring, until the annoyingly experimental 11 and the pretty but short conclusion on 12. Eh not the most marking PF album, but the first 6 tracks are worth checking out. 3.35

Literally impossible to understand, it's one of XXth century's failed attempts to redefine art and music by exploring different musical ways.
This album is incredibly ambitious and provides several interesting ideas spread apart the band's members different compositions (especially Wright and Gilmour's ones), but fails to be a good album as a whole, because it's simply not "good".
Now if you like the record's intellectual demarche, you will consider it as a incredible life changing masterpiece, because you're more attracted to the idea of this album rather than it's actual content. However you do not need to listen to it for this. If my rating was about my feelings when I listen to this, it would be 1,5.

The album's structure was a neat idea, but this album is nonetheless underwhelming. The live tracks are great, but the studio tracks sure sure aren't, except for bits of Sysyphus (especially the second part) and the third part of The Narrow Way. I'll keep the generous rating for the neat structure, the occasional interesting studio moments, and the fantastic live portion.

A decent, crude and extremely raw & psychedelic stuff in the live album. A dark, randomic & pointless interventions in the studio album. Ummagumma is a masterpiece of late-60īs avant-garde, but somewhat precarious in its whole concept. A nice and classic Floyd album as well.
