3.0 good | Brandon Scott EMERITUS | April 6th 18 | Everyone is sounding off on how each BB album sounds the same. Just like they sounded off on the rlast album. And the album before that. See? Coming up with original content is harder than you rthink!

4.0 excellent | Dmax28 | April 11th 18 | Their best album. Definitely their heaviest and maybe their catchiest at the same time. rThis is the album I always knew they could make. Nearly every song on this album brings ra new look for the band, meaning, yea it still sounds very much like Breaking Benjamin, rbut while some of their other material could fairly be labeled as weaker versions of rsome of their better songs, Ember stands well on it's own. I was really a big fan of rthe first two albums. Where Dark Before Dawn felt somewhat stale, this rejuvenates my rlove for the band. So stoked this turned out as well as I could imagine Breaking rBenjamin in 2018.

0.0 | Brendan Schroer STAFF | March 28th 18 | I was trying to come up with a clever and funny soundoff, but this album gave me nothing
to work with. Lemme come up with something on the fly...
hoo boy, how many times do they have to break Benjamin before they finally hang it up???
They've made so many mediocre songs, they're like... uh... Nickelback or something
Screw this

2.0 poor | judasgoat | April 14th 18 | The Dark of You is a frustrating song. It's not excellent, really it's not even great. It's a good song that shows that Breaking Benjamin have the ability, nascent though it is, to try something different. To possibly break out of their trademark sound that had already begun to grow stale on Dear Agony nearly a decade ago.
But they just don't. Not when the choruses are barely distinguishable from BB choruses on past albums (or even other songs on this album). Not when the guitar riffs on their so-called "heavier" album are buried in the mix (riffs that are almost the same as the ones on Dear Agony, no less). Not even when Ben's repeated, toneless screams of "RUN! RUN! RUN!" on Red Cold River border on self-parody. Not...ever, honestly.
If you love the band unconditionally, you'll love this. If you're still waiting on them to progress in any way whatsoever, it might be time to put down your old burned CDr copy of Phobia and leave the hall. Or maybe that's just me.

2.0 poor | Risodo | April 14th 18 | I don't know.... i've never been very much a fan of Breaking Benjamin and i've never been so interested in hearing much of them. With the release of "Ember" i countered my own will and gave this band a chance, and i regret it. 36 minutes of my day are in the trash. Listening to a album so generic and weak musically gave me even the desire of never checking out future releases from these guys. What a disgrace.

3.5 great | JWT155 | April 13th 18 | For a genre that used to be dominant and a mainstream radio staple of the early to mid 2000's to a now relegated and seemingly irrelevant, Breaking Benjamin release a record that can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with any records at the peak of mainstream heavy rock and gives life to a genre that's been on life support for the better part of a decade.

4.0 excellent | PaperRevival | April 13th 18 | It's the same Breaking Benjamin album as always. But, at this point, that's what you want from them tbh. It's weird, there's always two camps of folk; those who want bands to progress their sound and those who want them to sound like themselves. It's a fine line between the two to try and appease everyone. Breaking Benjamin don't seem to give a shit and will just do what they've been doing forever and it works. Why change now?

2.5 average | CriticalMyth | January 9th 20 | The biggest problem with this album is the incredibly muddy production. Anything truly interesting gets buried in a sludge of noise.

4.0 excellent | STALFOS83D | February 16th 19 | Their best release since We Are Not Alone for this fan.I see the fans disappointed in it complaint's seem to be most directed to being too formulaic this late in their career. At least they still have playing chops that don't turn to shit like other bands in the modern hard rock metallish sweepstakes wind up doing.I feel this takes the strengths of their discography and molds them into something leaner and meaner a bit more lively this time around. You'll find some of their heaviest material on this release done in familiar yet well executed manner.Ben's harmonies are killer some of the best I've heard in 2018 hard rock music. Also digging the few ambient bits that enhance certain tracks a nice little bonus from the guys this time around.Hope they continue making bolder music maybe something even unique for their style in their future release.

3.0 good | CinnamonGhoul | June 26th 18 | Some tracks like Torniquet, Red Cold River and especially The Dark of You stand out (Torn in Two/Blood are personal favorites) while everything else is average Breaking Benjamin which is majorly disheartening.

4.0 excellent | Epicenter | May 2nd 18 | This should've been their comeback album instead of Dark before Dawn. Much more consistent, better hooks, and Ben makes more and better uses of his harsh vocals while showing he's still a damn good singer in what is quite possibly their heaviest album. It's up there with Phobia and We Are Not Alone for me.

2.5 average | Antonius | April 28th 18 | Ben promised a heavy album and Ember certainly is one. However, I doubt that this is their heaviest one; certainly is not their best. Despite the multiple listenings, the only songs that managed to stand out for me were "Red Cold River" and "The Dark of You". Riffs seemed to be recycled and melodies are not the least exciting.

3.5 great | SneakCoot | April 13th 18 | If you're looking for more of the Breaking Benjamin sound we're used to already, this album is worth the listen. To me, it's not as good as Dark Before Dawn as none of the songs on this album really stood out to me.

0.0 | thelamestallion | April 13th 18 | I don't know. I'm cold on this one. Production is dope, probably their best. But I don't like the vocal work here at all. It's too layered, computerized, buried in bunch of effects and even autotuned at times, so there is no distinctive lead line to focus on. Songs rely on riffs too much, and every riff is almost the same. No more lead guitars (think of the beautiful lead line of "Breath"), the instrumental work lacks melody, and vocal melodies are never as inspired as they were on "Phobia" or even on "DBD". The composition is very formulaic, calculated and unnatural, almost no consistent progressions, just bare segment changes and repeats. Not mentioning the lyrics. Same words, same phrases, same constructions. Music of this kind should always remain somewhat predictable, it's the nature of hook-based formula, but damn, not this much. There is no certain flow in the album compositionally (even "DBD" possessed this feature to some point), you can easily change the order of songs to no effect, except for a few tracks which are connected to each other with a small segueing sample. There are some quite interesting rhythmic decisions on "Tourniquet" and "Psycho", and some songs of the second half of the album are really catchy ("Torn in two", "Blood", "Save yourself"), but overall the album is too monotonous, it falls really less memorable and inspired even than "Dark before dawn".
