So many riffs, incredible technique and the songwriting my friends...heavy, beautiful and fast with a more than interesting use of screams, growls and melodic vocals. I'd recommend the whole thing but Crop Kille and Salt Thrower are big highlights. This is a game-changer imo.

I'm not going to lie, I blew this album off for a long time because the whole slug theme sounded stupid. Don't get me wrong, I was definitely seeing the Sput-hype surrounding the album, but I figured it was the kind of ironic hype Sputnik users are known for. When I finally decided to check it out, I was blown away. I had assumed a band that crafted entire albums around slugs would be second-rate, at best, just hoping to get by on their weird theme. Instead, this was one of the best technical death metal albums of the year. On Esoteric Malacology, Slugdge manages to do everything right. They're technical without losing sight of the song, they're chaotic without veering into sheer chaos, they're melodic without sacrificing their dark atmospheres and heaviness, and they're aggressive without forgetting about dynamics. While most technical death metal bands can manage some of those elements, it's very rare when a band nails them all. I'm definitely looking forward to what these guys do next.

Proggy death metal duo that has alot more goin' on for them than a gastropodous fixation, to put it lightly -- huge full-band fabrication many actuals would die for, mingling of growl/rasp/near-operatic cleans, robust+technical performances through-n-through, stockpile of riffage alongside labyrinthine structures. Encounters with deja vu and 7+ mins being the norm make em kinda tiresome, but there's so much elaborate heavy horsepower to dive into here; and ooo does it sound good. Slimy icing on the cake is also swimmingly integrating their sludgy namesake.

I would have never expected such a sick ass progressive death metal album from a band called Slugdge. I was thoroughly expecting some slow sludgy stuff but this was magnificent DM. First album I have ever heard from these guys and I now plan to listen to every one of their albums. The songwriting on this superb and the subject matter is amazing!

These guys make unserious music very seriously. Such a sick and crushing DM album, "Crop Killer" made me headbang so hard that coworkers asked me if I had a stroke. The long-running time makes it a bit tiresome, but the last two tracks slap hard.

Progressive death, sludge, thrash and doom shouldn't flow this well. 8 songs at an hour long shouldn't go by so easily in one sitting. A testament to the songwriting and the talent to execute it!

Proggy tech death somewhere in the realm near Opeth, Gojira and Mastodon with a bit more emphasis on the death side of things than any of those mentioned. The grooves, riffs and percussion are absolutely stellar throughout the album and this is what really makes Escoteric Malacology special. The vocalist does a good job with a mix of growls and sort of hymnal cleans at times keeping things from getting boring. If you just shuffle to a random track none of them will be a miss and most of them will be great but the album as a whole drags on after the first two-thirds because Slugdge have a solid but limited bag of tricks that doesn't provide much variance track to track. For a fairly young band this is one to keep an eye on if they can find a way to bring more variables into the equation. Would be a killer live set because these riffs and grooves just keep coming.

The absurd amount of riffs is stunning and in shape of ecstasy. What a wonderful band, what a diverse style and what a brilliant concept. These 58 minutes of pure Sludge were the best of my day, words flee from my mouth when i try to describe how great this record is.

Potential album of the year material here. Some especially tight songwriting on tap, highlighted
by a dynamic and vibrant production job. Slugdge have never released an album outside of the
'excellent' range, but this sits firmly at the top of the list.
