Buried vocals? Flute samples? Live-in-the-garage recording? Friggin' Tibetan throat singing? Who thought this could ever work? Then again, who thought the Beastie Boys as a whole would ever work?

In one way I love the aesthetic of it - cheap speaker vocals, live garage funk instrumentation, raw anything goes attitude, old-days hardcore tribute spurts. But then we've also got buried rhymes and an album that feels overstuffed. Good instrumentals, but the amount of them drag this one down a bit.

Probably the most underrated Beastie Boys album. Might not be the best in terms of music composition, but definitely wins as a showcase of the guys' signature sampling technique.

I adore this album, for me it takes the edge over Check Your Head cause there's more great
straight-up hip-hop tracks on IC (Sure Shot, B-Boys Makin' With the Freak Freak, Root Down,
Get it Together, The Update, Alright Hear This, Flute Loop, Do It, The Scoop and Bodhisattva
Vow), which is half the album devoted to it (and what I personally think they do best). Then
there's the instrumental jazzy-funk stuff, which I think there was a bit too much of on CYH,
whereas here it's spread out a bit more. That leaves the two hardcore songs (Heart Attack
Man is my favourite Beasties punk track), and motherfuckin' Sabotage, the most hyped and
energetic song probably ever recorded.

" We're really our craft in the studio," said Ad-rock in 1994, we're really experimenting a lot." Hence "Sabotage - the perfect blend of punk and rap. But that's just one reason why trio fourth record is seminal. First up, there's Q-tip's run out on "Get it together". Then there are the jams ("futterman's Rule, "Eugene's lament") as a live band. That's not forgetting MCA challenging misogyny in Hip hop on "SureShot." And how about the sampling a flute on that same song (and on "Fluteloop")? When All this is taken as a whole, 'Ill Communication' makes most bands look as imaginative as a pavement.
This album is one of my favourite Hip Hop albums ever and one of my favourite Beastie boys album.
