This album really isn't as bad as most people portray it to be. It definitely doesn't hold a candle to the rest of their discography, but its perfectly acceptable on its own merits.

Fight For the Rock faces too much negativity and resentment from Savatage fans. Unquestionably, it is not amongst the band's greatest albums nor it contains super hits. It appears that many forget that this was released in the mid-80s during a period in which glam rock started its ascendance to fame and record companies pushed for commercial tracks. These two factors are depicted perfectly in tracks like 'Out on the Streets', 'Crying for Love' and, 'Day after Day', moments that surely contributed to Jon Oliva's addiction to alcohol. However, I am adamant that if it was not for the record's poor production, songs like 'Hyde', 'Red Light Paradise' or 'The Edge of Midnight', would get much more respect, recognition and praise. Recommendations: "Fight for the Rock", "The Edge of Midnight", "Red Light Paradise".

Savatage release a travesty of an album being forced by their label to become more commercial. It shows hints of the Savatage we know and love, however most of it is the glammiest of glam.

Critics, fans and even the band themselves have almost unanimously panned Savatage's 3rd studio album FIGHT FOR THE ROCK. At
this point in their career, it appeared that the band was in the midst of a serious identity crisis. After defining their
sound with such fierce power metal albums as SIRENS and POWER OF THE NIGHT, Savatage are reduced here to meandering through
some rather tepid pop / hard rock songs that contain only scant traces of their original sound.
It isn't necessarily the fact that any of the songs are particularly terrible. They just that none of them are very
compelling. The album as a whole seemed ill conceived, right down to the goofy Iwo Jima flag raising on the cover. The
production is rather flat and the sound quality thin when compared with their prior records. Ultimately, it lacked the heavy
metal edginess of their early records which even their most devoted fans had come to expect. This album was definitely the
lowest point of Savatage's career.

At least Hyde and The Edge of Midnight are kinda cool. Lady in Disguise would be way better played by a different sort of band with some different instruments. But man...this is a pretty bad album overall. It has this lame 80s radio rock sound to a lot of it, like they were trying a little too hard to be successful. Nothing nearly as badass as Rage to be found on this record But that's largely the record company's fault, I've heard.
