Y'know those Barbie Dolls how each year whatever company made them would give them new accesories to keep up with the times and change as to what the trend states? Thats just about the case with this band. Poor instrumentals pair with horrid lyrics may bring Hawthorne Heights record sales, but dollar cannot pay for artist credibility, a thing they lack.

To put it simple and straight forward: There are simply bands out there that do the thing better and not as cliche. SPeaking of the instrumentation as well as the lyrics. And foremost the lyrics. "Cut my wrists and black my eyes". Angsty cut-my-wrists-lyrics was redefined with this band. I can see why so many people can relate and connect with the music and the lyrics, it does not change though that it's sub-par. Well, and that others do it better. =)

It was one of my favorite albums in middle school and whenever I return I enjoy it very much. It's cheesy, moody, and a poor attempt at maturity, but all of that can be said for my middle school self and that nostalgia comes with every listen.

The high school me wants to loathe this to its core. I remember exhibiting some combination of cringe and laughter when I heard "Ohio is for Lovers;" it was one of the first times I realized music could be laughably bad. And yet, as I sit down and give the album an honest listen, I find it's not completely insufferable. Yes, the vocals are poor, the instrumental qualities basic and mixing on the muddy side, but it honestly bores more than it offends. Perhaps not being completely horrendous isn't much of a defense, but that's also the advantage of having low expectations.

Pretty much the album that got me into forming my own musical taste. It's not really a classic, but it's a classic to me. I feel like I'm doing this album an injustice by not giving it a full review as it has given more to me than a sound-off can show, but I felt the need to justify my 5 rating and give this more than just a number. I'll review it one day, and it will be that day that I lose all credibility on this great site forever as my opinion of this album is well above the rating it has. Still, I think this is a decent work in the emo genre, but by far not the best it has to offer. Definitely not a 2.4, at least a 3

I can pop in some Senses Fail (though hardly), Underoath, Saosin without Anthony Green, and Project 86 once in a while to remember having a pretty fun childhood even though I don't like their music much, this however is something not even nostalgia can get me to listen to again because the lyrics remind me what a whiny and self centered person I was back in High School. The only purpose for this is to look and laugh at their lyrics and think "just how can anyone relate to this"?

My older brother indirectly got me into these guys when I was still in elementary school; past me is now going to have fun chucking things in the furnace. The Silence in Black and White, while not an entirely horrendous debut, was pretty much the record every scene and emo kid adored at the time. The musicianship is decent, though the bandmates aren't competent songwriters at all. If you put that together with the cringeworthy lyrics and the nerve-wrecking vocal interplay between JT Woodruff and Casey Calvert, then you've got a release which should've been delayed.

Although Hawthorne Heights debut has some solid and catchy moments, the lyrics are horrid, the vocals (especially the screaming) can sound annoying and awful, and as a whole is a uncreative and uninspired piece of work. Just download Niki FM and Ohio Is For Lovers and be on your merry way.

i give this an "average" because this album is better than a lot of the emo crap that came out around the same time. "ohio is for lovers", no matter how terrible the lyrics, is an incredibly catchy song and some others have their moments of goodness. but for the most part this is a completely forgettable band.

So many people want to pay out Hawthorne Heights just because they are, well "emo"
When I'm willing to bet that half the people that do bag them, probably haven't even properly listened to them.
This is their first album and it is their best. With the silence at the start of songs then the impact hitting hard with Casey's screams, it delivers good.
It's just a shame that the other two albums couldn't live up to this one...

I do realize this is their first album, and their still learning and expanding their horizons. But this just really isn't all that good. The screaming is either used too much or at the wrong time. They try to have a breakdown in like every song. I only like 1.5 of the songs, yes, 1.5. The end of Life On Standby and Niki Fm. That's it.

The impressive debut record from Hawthorne Heights features an almost decent song in "Ohio is For Lovers" and then nothing else. Being a true mark that hardcore is getting ready to blow up (but labels refuse to see it and try to sugarcoat it), Hawthorne Heights incorporate a psuedo-TOCS-era Underoath with even more pop punk sensibilities, and a vocalist who should really not be singing professionally anywhere but at a Barmitzvah.

This is a pretty terrible album. I guess at never seeing the band live or anything like that, one could have the impression of "Eh, it's alright". Once you see them live, you want nothing to do with them at all. The band is just flat out terrible.
